Uncle Mel is Told to Relax about EMU Baseball

ROMULUS — Uncle Mel answered the phone call while sitting in his office inside the News Compound in the city were the world gathers at the gate of Interstate 94. Suddenly the alarm of breaking news came across the wire from the offices of the Mid-American Conference located in the city of Cleveland, Ohio.

As Uncle Mel glances down at the page in front of him he sat up in his large leather office chair like a small cannonball and said to anybody close enough to hear the words of excitement – “This is it nieces and nephews!,” the 2012 Eastern Michigan University baseball season is officially started because the conference is ready to show the world the 2012 Baseball Preseason coaches’ poll.

Uncle Mel excused himself from the phone call to concentrate and read the news from Cleveland.

The good folks in Cleveland who make the claim to be the birth place of rock and roll music are rolling through the prediction like a brand new roller coaster at Cedar Point which is just an hour away in Sandusky, Ohio.

Eastern Michigan University led the league last season with a team batting average of .298 is picked by the Mid-American Conference to finish in third place in the West Division.

“What the heck!” Uncle Mel said and took off his wire-rim glasses to rub his eyes in disbelief.

Last season the Eagles entered the MAC Baseball Tournament played in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio as the fifth seed with a conference record of 16-11 and with 37 overall victories the most in 29 years.

Kent State University is picked to finish in first place in the East Division and to take home the conference championship.

The same procrastinators are picking Central Michigan University to win the West Division crown in front of the University of Toledo and the Eagles.

Eastern Michigan University baseball coach Jay Alexander starts his third season as the man in charge on the bench for the Eagles and his record is 89-89 including recording his 250 victory as a collegiate baseball coach against the Golden Flashes at the tournament last May 27, a 4-2 victory.

Alexander has taken the Eagles to the Mid-American Conference Tournament in the past three seasons.

The season gets started Friday February 17, 2012 at 4 p.m. in the city of Spartanburg, South Carolina at the University of South Carolina-Upstate Baseball Tournament.

The Mid-American Conference opener will be a three game series against Miami University March 23, 2012 weather permitting but before that the Eagles will get comfortable at the coziest ballpark in the conference – Oestrike Stadium by hosting the Classic March 16-18 against Niagara University.

2012 MAC Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll:

MAC East Division

  1. Kent State University – 59 points
  2. Miami – 48 points
  3. Bowling Green – 36 points
  4. Ohio – 34 points
  5. Akron – 17 points
  6. Buffalo – 16 points

MAC West Division

  1. Central Michigan University – 54 points
  2. Toledo – 45 points
  3. EASTERN MICHIGAN – 43 points
  4. Northern Illinois – 36 points
  5. Western Michigan – 21 Points
  6. Ball State – 11points

Uncle Mel examines the results and is wondering a couple of things.

How can anybody in Cleveland vote against Bowling Green State University with Danny Schultz still coaching the Falcons?

Why there is no respect for the Eagles, Eastern Michigan University took a weekend series last season against the Rockets?

Kent State University is picked to win their fourth straight championship and a trip to the NCAA Baseball Tournament and oh by the way the Golden Flashes were dismissed early from the baseball tournament.

Here is what your old Uncle Mel is thinking about the Eagles baseball team this season.

The Eagles will go as far as the pitching will carry them; Alexander told Uncle Mel at the start of practice, the pitching is going to be more consistant because he thought that the philosophy of the staff last season caused too many times heart aches because of too many base-on-balls.

Uncle Mel told Alexander that he is worried about the ability to hit the long ball?

Alexander placed his hand on Uncle Mel’s shoulder and looked him straight into his eyes and explained, “Big Time we are able to hit home runs but that is not what we do best, we are a challenging group at the plate and we can hit!”

“Last season,” Alexander told Uncle Mel, “the Eagles were too aggressive at the plate and too many times we killed rallies by not doing the simple things.”

Eastern Michigan University is going to be a force in the Mid-American Conference this season and if there is enough offense and steady pitching the Eagles could be crowned as the champion of the conference.

If all that happens to the Eagles then Alexander will be on the phone making hotel reservation in Omaha, Nebraska and Uncle Mel will have to make a call too and make contact with the good folks at the  AAA Travel and getting a trip-ticket to the home of the College World Series.
