PGA TOUR What It Means: February 19, 2012 — Los Angeles

What an unbelieveable final round at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club. That starts off this week’s What It Means:
1) Kudos to Bill Haas on an awesome decision and an awesome putt to win the Northern Trust on the second playoff hole, #10 on the golf course. Even though his drive went way left, he decided to not do anything too fancy, instead hitting out sideways, leaving himself 40 feet for birdie. It was a bonus that he made the putt, but it was the smart decision that gave himself a chance.
Haas won again on a big stage in front of two very talented players in Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley. I think in some respects, even after winning the FedEx Cup, it’ll take a major to “validate” Haas, but this win does do a lot.
2) Mickelson and Bradley should be applauded for battling back on a hard day at Riviera and making two huge birdie putts to get into the playoff on 18. Phil’s 29 footer never left the cup and Keegan’s just had enough to get in. Big putts in big moments: the hallmarks of a champion.
3) Dustin Johnson has all the talent in the world and hits it a mile but he has to get his short game in order. He could have won this week but he putted horrendously, especially down the stretch, and hit some of the worst wedge shots I’ve seen from a PGA Tour player in a long time. DJ will win a major — I really believe it — but he has to improve his game from 150 yards and in…and do it fast.
