The Los Angeles Kings and a Miracle

The phrase, “ the Kings need a miracle” is an understatement. Lately the level of play has been less than mediocre and certainly not playoff material. I think I speak for all Kings fans when I say I am emotionally drained from this rollercoaster of a season. Of course there has been the occasional glimmer of hope where I get butterflies in my stomach and think, “this is our year!” …And then reality hits.

In the offseason, I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the signing of Mike Richards and Simon Gagne. These guys were just what we needed to step up and really make a name for ourselves in the NHL. Now fast forward to present day. Like most players on the Kings, Richards cant seem to find the back of the net and to make things worse, Gagne has been out since December 26th with a concussion after getting hit in Phoenix. Despite the lack of goal scoring this season, the Kings have been very fortunate to have Jonathan Quick between the pipes. If it wasn’t for him I’m sure this season would be much uglier than it has been. He seems to be able to do it all… except scoring goals, of course. Something drastic had to happen and it did when the organization fired head coach Terry Murray in mid December, at which point I’m sure we all thought, “hurray, there is a light at the end of the tunnel!” Enter Daryl Sutter.

For the most part he has shaken things up with the Kings. The first few weeks of Sutter’s arrival revealed a spark of passion in the players that Kings fans, for the most part, hadn’t seen all season. The Kings were finally winning. Youngens Jordan Nolan and Dwight King were brought up during this time and both scored goals in their first game. However, what seemed to be a new found hope for us fans didn’t last. The Kings have only won 2 of their last 8 games, scoring a grand total of 6 goals during said games, and lost 3 of the 8 1-0.

So, what is going on? The Kings can’t seem to score. There is so much talent on this team, so much potential! So, what is missing? Maybe the “potential” is the problem. While it is usually used as a positive word, it also means that something isn’t happening yet. Someone on this team (other than our starting goalie) needs to step up. Jonathon quick cannot do it all on his own. We need a top line forward… don’t we always? Plus what can the Kings really offer right now to any other team and whom can they afford to give up?

I am not sure about anyone else, but I am still waiting to see the Doughty deal pay off, Richards to be the man we thought he was when we signed him and Gagne to be back and show us why we were all so excited about getting him. Love is unconditional and I will always love this team, but it breaks my heart seeing the good in this team that the players themselves don’t seem to see.  Unfortunately, it’s much harder down in the thick of it. This is still a team. No one person can do it all, nor can one person be to blame. This team needs to bring back the pride, passion and power that they are supposed to stand for or things are going to keep falling apart piece by piece. I hope the Kings can find the glue to pull them together soon. Much love.
