Wizards Update: Wedding Crashers

Okay, with each passing week I find myself becoming more and more negative towards my hometown basketball squad.  The Wizards are young, inexperienced, and far from fundamentally sound within the confines of the basketball court.  Outside those confines however, the team has made some headlines.

This week was no exception.

As Wizards guard Nick Young walked through lobby of the Ritz-Carlton late Sunday night he didn’t know what he was in for.  A wedding was being held that evening and a few University of Arizona alums recognized Nick from his days at USC.  They invited him to share in the festivities.

”I just said, ‘Congratulations to the bride and groom,’ I didn’t know nobody,” Young said. “I went in there and gave a speech. I was a wedding crasher. Will Ferrell [1]. I didn’t have nothing else to do.”

Nothing else to do Nick?  You didn’t have a game to prepare for, or tape to watch, or teammates to get to know?  Maybe you could watch some tape of a player actually passing the ball, you know, the thing players do when they’re not shooting…

The Wizards went on to lose the following night 104-88 to the Suns.  Nick shot 3-13 from the floor and finished with 10 points.  Another example of a player maknig headlines for the wrong reasons then turning in a sub-par performance on the stage that matters.

Still, the Wiz finished 2-3 on their longest road trip of the season.  They doubled their season road win total with those two wins and, at times played good-looking basketball.

“We’re definitely coming together chemistry-wise, being around each other off the court and playing hard for each other on the court,”Rashard Lewis said at the end of the Wizards trip as they prepared for the trip back to D.C.

At 7-25 for the season it’s a apparent these Wizards are far from a finished project.  Word around Wizards camp is that they plan to stand-pat and not make any moves (Andray Blatche is currently the only Wizards player currently on the open market).  Building from within, through the draft, while developing the young talent they currently have is a nice thought; but will it work?

The Wiz will play the Kings tonight in D.C.  At 10-22 the young Kings have struggled as well this season, but they play in the much deeper Western Conference and play in the same division as the Lakers and Clippers.  A win tonight would legitimize a semi-successful road trip and show that the Wiz are starting to come together as a team.

We’ll just have to wait and see which Wizards team shows up tonight, then watch as John Wall tears up the Rising Stars game during the All-Star Break.

Upcoming: Kings tonight, All-Star Break!, then @ the Bucks.
