Slow Second Half Start

After showing much promise before the All Star break, the Rockets are off to a slow and disappointing start to the second half of this season. The Rockets are 1-2 since the break, with the lone win coming ugly at home against Toronto. In these 3 games the Rockets have shown absolutely no effort and the their weaknesses has been exposed. Interior defense, lack of rebounding, horrid transition defense and no closer. All of these were exposed in last night’s home loss to Denver.

The Stats:

Rebounding:                        Houston 35-49 Denver

Points in the Paint:            Houston 36-52 Denver

Fastbreak Points:               Houston 7-19 Denver

2nd Chance Points:            Houston 17-33 Denver

4th Quarter FG%:               Houston 47%-70% Denver

Although Kevin Martin had a great game (32 points in the first 3 quarters) he couldn’t score when it counted as he only had 3 in the final period and ended with 35 for the game. Kyle Lowry ran into foul trouble and had to sit the majority of the 3rd, but came out with a vengeance in the 4th playing the entire quarter and scoring 15 in the final period. It wasn’t nearly enough though as the Rockets defense gave up 35 and lost the game by 12.

In a way, the Rockets game style sort of resembles Lebron James. They have what it takes to stick with anybody for 3-3.5 quarters but nobody to take over in late game situations.

After the loss, Coach McHale was again questioning the team’s effort, which has been non-existent at times, especially since the break. After today’s practice, Samuel Dalembert called a player’s only meeting, sensing that change was needed. After the meeting Chandler Parsons tweeted: “We got better today.” Hopefully this a sign of good things to come.

With the trade deadline only a couple weeks away, expect the Rockets to be very active searching for an interior presence both defensively and offensively. That seems to be the missing link on this team full of great role players.
