Here’s this week’s What It Means:
1) Congrats to Rory McIlroy on winning The Honda Classic and becoming the number one player in the world. What was most impressive to me is that when Tiger Woods made his charge and shot the 62 he responded right back with the birdie on 13, and then played the Bear Trap strongly, using key up and downs to keep his momentum going. That’s impressive.
Rory may not stay #1 for long because of the weird nature of the Official World Golf Ranking, but over time I expect him to be there and be there for many, many years.
2) Kudos to Tiger on his 62 today in tough conditions. He eagled both par-5s, including a dandy of an eagle on 18 hitting a BEAUTIFUL 5-iron up to eight feet.
Tiger is getting really close to putting this together for four days and THAT’S when all the questions will be answered and Tiger can just go back to playing golf again. Maybe at Doral we’ll see them answered.
3) Harris English faltered with a 77 on Sunday but he’s a good young player to watch out for in the future. Today’s stage may have been a bit too much for him, but down the line this experience will pay off big time.
