With free agency looming, the Buffalo Bills and Stevie Johnson were able to strike a deal. The Bills did not announce terms of the deal, but a club source told NFL Network’s Albert Breer that it is for five years and $36.25 million, including $19.5 million guaranteed. Johnson is set to get $24 million over the first three years of the deal.
Was this too much? The real question is who else could they have signed for less? Some of the top free agents include Mario Manningham, Wes Welker, Reggis Wayne and Vincent Jackson. I guarantee that none of these guys would have the love for Buffalo and want to play in Buffalo more than Johnson. I bet he could have received more money testing the waters in free agency but the chemisty between Stevie and Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick would have been hard to duplicate with another team.
“I knew where I wanted to be, so it wouldn’t have made any sense to go see if this team wanted me or if that team wanted me,” Johnson said. “It doesn’t matter. What’s the point of looking if you know where you want to be, and this is where I wanted to be.”
Stevie only had one condition:
He texted Fitzpatrick : If you get Mohawk Mullet and a design on the left side I’ll sign TODAY! If you don’t think about everyone in the billsmafia you’ll be letting down. The ball is in your court. Don’t be selfish.
Fitzpatrick texted back: I’m looking up a local barber right now… send me the design.
Here’s the result!
This type of sportsmanship from Fitzy says a lot about his character. Really shows he’ll do about anything for his teammates. I think he needed Johnson on this team as much as all of us.
