What are the Habs playing for?

I haven’t blogged in a long time but I wanted to share my opinion on the Habs season. This season was probably the most bizarre season for the team that I remember. Here are just a couple of reasons:

• Perry Pearn fired 1 hour before gametime
• Jacques Martin fired on gameday and replaced by an interim head coach
• Scott Gomez over 1 calendar year without a goal
• Mike Cammalleri traded during the 2nd intermission
• Andrei Markov progressing
• Geoff Molson joins twitter
• Language fiasco when an unilingual English speaking coach was hired
• Habs beat the Red Wings 7-0
• Habs beat the Rangers 4-0
• Habs playing Sunday evening games at home
• Do I need to continue?

With all those factors mentioned above, you can’t be really surprised that the Canadiens are sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference and 28th in the NHL.

So what is motivating the Canadiens players and coaching staff to practice and play hard? There is no chance that they are making the playoffs, the trade deadline is gone so they ain’t getting traded, so what is it? A new contract? Playing for a job next season? Honestly, how many players are in danger of losing their jobs next season? Like Michel Therrien said when he took over as coach of the Penguins: “You think they care? They don’t care”

Randy Cunneyworth knows that he won’t be back next season as head coach in Montreal. You can argue that he is coaching to get himself a coaching job in another organization for next season. I’m sure he is but how can he motivate players that are not motivated and know that Cunneyworth won’t be back next season? This is a tough situation for Randy.

That being said, a more detailed season in review will follow after the end of the season. My debate now is to determine which team to cheer for during the playoffs. I am debating between the Vancouver Canucks and the Winnipeg Jets (assuming they make it). Can anyone help me make my choice?
