Wizards Update: Masked Mamba Comes to Town

Half way through a tumultuous season for the Wizards, I find myself at a loss.  Covering them for these past 37 games has been great; hell, I’m watching the games anyway, why not write about what I see, right?  Still, a greater problem has emerged from this terrible 8-29 season: these guy’s are a pain to cover!

The Lone Mamba?

I’ve harked on how the team needs to make moves to better themselves in the future.  Andray Blatche, Nick Young, Rashard Lewis’s Contract, all of these need to go before the Wizards will be able to fully move forward.  You know this, I know this, I’ve repeated myself 100 times since starting this blog.

So, I’ve decided to do something about it.  Much like the acclaimed book Ice to the Eskimos by Jon Spoelstra (yes, Eric Spoelstra’s father) I’m going to market this blog a little differently.  The book recounts the New Jersey Net’s trials and tribulations as they tried to build their brand in the early 1990′s.  Then, like now, the Nets were an NBA bottom-feeder with little to no talent to bring the crowds into their stadium.  What Spoelstra did was market Nets games as events to see the marquee players from other teams (a simple idea, but at the time few teams had thought of it).

Come see Micheal Jordan and the Chicago Bulls take on your New Jersey Nets this Thursday night!  Long story short the Nets increased ticket sales and eventually built a successful brand.  We all now know the soon to be Brooklyn Nets will be in some trouble if they can’t nab Dwight Howard soon; but that’s another story.

So, to stay on the narrow track I’ve outlined here I’m going to talk about the Wizards opponents more, especially if the opponent is a marquee team (Lakers, Heat, Bulls, Thunder).  So if you’re sick of reading me complain about Blatche’s arrant 15-footers or McGee’s unbelievable stupidity don’t fret, here come the Lakers!

The Lakers are 23-15 and currently 4th in the Western Conference playoff race.  Kobe Bryant is leading the league in scoring with 28.7 points per game.  We’ve all heard the trade rumors, the Gilbert rumors, the player-only meetings, but somehow the Lakers have remained relevant and in the playoff race in an ever difficult West.

Last night, after a three game winning streak, the Lakers went on the road (where they’re only 6-13 on the season) to Detriot and lost 88-85 in OT.  Kobe had a forgettable 22 points on 8-24 from the field and now the Lake-show limps into Washington needing a win to get their road woes righted.

The Western Conference won’t wait for the Lakers to figure themselves out.  The Lakers need to feast on lesser competition like the Pistons and Wizards.  An unsuccesful road trip now could be disastrous for the Lakers as the trade dealine approaches.

Meanwhile, the Wiz are one loss away from their 30th loss of the year and John Wall finanly called his team out for joking too much during pregame and warmups!

The Lakers are in need of a bounce-back win while the Wiz are in need of an attitude adjustment.

Enter: Masked Mamba

Coming Up: Lakers tonight, Portland Saturday, then @ San Antonio Monday
