Howard rumors heat up as deadline looms

The Orlando Magic finished the week at 3-1 capped by Sunday’s easy win over the Indiana Pacers 107-94.

Still the most important news concerning the Magic is the future of Dwight Howard as rumors continue to burn up the internet with the offers the Orlando Magic are receiving.

Here are two of the more interesting ones from the weekend:

Mitch Lawrence [1] of the New York Daily News reports:

The Warriors got nowhere when they recently tried to get Dwight Howard in a deal. A Warrior executive said the Magic turned down Monta Ellis and David Lee, with Orlando telling the Warriors it will only move Howard by Thursday’s trading deadline if it can get a “major player” in return.

Talent wise the deal isn’t a bad one but has been slammed by critics and fans because well neither Ellis or Lee are players you build a team around. Ellis is a volume shooter who is the leader of a team void of a playoff appearance since Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson left the franchise. Lee can score and rebound but if he is your second or third best player then you are in business.

Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports another rumored discussion…one Orlando has interest in: [2]

Magic executives are said to be unimpressed with the assets Howard’s three preferred teams could provide in a trade, prompting them to engage in a calculated campaign to expand the field of potential suitors beyond the Nets, Mavericks and Lakers. But the team that can make the strongest case for Orlando to depart from its risky strategy of holding onto Howard are the Bulls, who could offer 7-footer Omer Asik, Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu, sources said. The Bulls also could offer a valuable first-round pick from Charlotte — top-14 protected in this year’s draft but but unprotected by 2016.

Boozer, Deng, and Asik are an interesting trio to consider but I question if that is the best deal out there. Boozer comes with a million questions regarding his ability to be consistent. Deng is certainly a glue guy who is productive at both ends of the floor but a large part of his recent success is tied to Rose. Asik is a young center who by and large is still a project. He could develop into a double double type player but the risk far out weights the idea of trading Howard. Even more interesting is that this deal isn’t even something Chicago will consider without commitment from Howard long term.

Berger rightfully goes on to point out that the Bulls like their team and have built it in a certain manner. Trading for Howard without assurance is not something the very cautious franchise is likely to engage in.

Nothing will be good enough. That much is clear.

Much work lies ahead for the Magic front office.
