Free agency begins on March 13th and according to an article from buffalonews.com the Bills are $20.9 million under their projected salary cap for the 2012 season. They stand $32.8 million under their cap in terms of actual cash spending. Those totals do not count the new contracts by tight end Scott Chandler and linebacker Kirk Morrison. Therefore, the big question is, who should they spend money on?
Let’s take a look at both sides of the ball:
Offense: Now that the Bills have Fitzpatrick, Johnson, Chandler locked down for a few years it might be time to focus on locking down Fred Jackson to a long term contract, but the front office will probably only worry about this next year when his contract runs out. Wishful Bills fans would love to see Vincent Jackson in Buffalo blue and white, but with the emergence of secondary receivers such as Nelson, Jones, and Roosevelt why spend the money on Vincent Jackson? They still have the option to re-sign Parrish and could probably pick up ex-Bills Lee Evans (if the price is right) to fill in as the number 2 receiver.
When healthy, the Bills offensive line was clicking. Remember last year when Fitzpatrick had only been sacked 3 times in the first five games and when Jackson could find those gaps for big yards? That was due to a their decent O-Line. I only see them re-signing Demetrius Bell. Bell already knows the system and they may get a hometown discount with him. Let’s just hope the line stays off the injury reserve list and stays on the field!
Well, if it were up to me I would sign every free agent from the list. The Bills were among the worse in every defensive category in the league, so the question is where do they need the most help? They could spend a ton of cash on former number one DE Mario Williams but looks like Buffalo might go after South Carolina’s DE Melvin Ingram as their number one pick in the upcoming draft.
How many of you out there would love to see London Fletcher on the Bills again? At the right price, why not! He’s an improvement from Bryan Scott or Arthur Moats also Scott is not currently signed so why not spend a few buck on Fletcher. I’m also a nostalgic type of fan so bringing back Fletch would be ok with me. I bet Brandon Jacobs is still feeling this hit!
Carlos Rogers, Tracy Porter, and Rashean Mathis are among those defensive backs available in free agengy and would certainly be an upgrade for the Bills. I could see the Bills perhaps spending some money on DB’s. Opposing quarterbacks completed 63 percent of their passes and this will need to change if the Bills want to make the playoffs.
GM Buddy Nix made this statement about free agency, “I say we’re gonna be aggressive, what I mean is this time if there’s a difference-maker — not necessarily a position — but if there’s a guy that can come in here and immediately improve our football team, we’ll get in the hunt early this time,”
I say, leave nothing on the table and spend some cash.
P.S. What’s with the hype about Matt Flynn? Does anybody remember Rob Johnson???
