Analyzing the Martellus Bennett Signing

Earlier today, the New York Giants signed TE Martellus Bennett, who previously backed up TE Jason Witten on the Dallas Cowboys. The 6’6″ 275 pound behemoth was a second round pick back in 2008. Over the past 4 years, Bennett amassed 85 receptions for 846 yards and 4 touchdowns. He has averaged an abysmal 10 yards per reception and all 4 touchdowns came in his rookie season. His work ethic for the game has been questioned and has been part of the reason why he did not find a larger role in Dallas.  However, he is known to be a good blocker, and has started some games to add to the run game. His blocking skills probably would make him the answer at TE for this season.

It is clear the Giants only want him short term because they gave him a one year $2.5 million deal. But make no mistake, he can easily top Jake Ballard on the depth chart. Both are roughly the same size, but Bennett is much faster. He ran a 4.68 40 yard time while Ballard is much slower at 4.84 seconds. While Bennett is knocked for dropping passes, Ballard was not much better. Ballard was virtually non-existent in the receiving game during the playoffs. He caught a total of 5 passes for 43 yards an no touchdowns during the 4 playoff games. Further, he is going to come of ACL surgery, which can be hard to come back to normal form afterwards, especially for larger players like TEs.

This move impacts the draft needs of the Giants. The Giants will probably not focus on tight end in the early rounds of the draft, if at all. There is still a chance reserve player Christian Hopkins can fight Bennett for the starting spot, but at this point, there is little to no analyses on his performance.

Bennett is a no risk signing that has a high ceiling. In today’s NFL, tight ends have a more important role, and Bennett has all the tools to become a top starting tight end.
