Lakers Stick to what Works

Last night the Lakers rallied back to beat the Memphis Grizzlies in double overtime. The play of Andrew Bynum aka “The Kraken” was spectacular. His 37 points, 16 rebounds, and add 1 block was to much for the grizzles. This was Andrew Bynum’s second time in his six year career with over 35 points and 15 rebounds. There were times in the game he  showed fans across the globe why the Lakers are holding on to him, and not trading him this season. Andrew Bynum  37 points, 16 rebounds, and shot 83.3 percent from the field. The last time a player hit those marks in a single game was Alonzo Mourning on February 23, 2000, in a win against the Nets. Mourning totaled 43 points, 16 rebounds, and went 13-14 from the field (92.9 pct).

“They’re trusting me now,” Bynum said of his teammates. “They’re just looking to get me the ball. When I get it, I’m doing decent things with it. Cutting down the turnovers. But it’s part of learning and being a dominant player.”

Kobe Bryant was classic Kobe last night. Bryant contributed with 34 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assist. Bryant scored only four points in the 2nd quarter which consisted with a pair of free throws and a layup with 0:09 left before halftime .  Just like a true NBA All-Star Bryant stepped up when his team needed him the most. Making a clutch 26 foot jumper with 1:32 left in the 4th quarter to tie the game. Bryant looked as if he could not be stopped as he drove in the lane. Bryant is starting to feel the release of pressure as the play of  Bynum keeps improving.

“He can do it every night,” Bryant said. “He’s been doing it every night. When you’re a great player, it kind of comes easy to you, the rhythm and the reads and stuff like that. So, he can keep on doing it for sure.”

Steve Blake played great his dribble penetration and passing were the best I’ve seen from him this year. Brown has found a second unit that produces finally. Blake, Goudlock, Barnes, Murphy, and the go to guy Bynum. This unit in the last week has really played well. The real question is will Pau Gasol make it past the trade deadline Thursday?

Side Notes:

This was an outstanding game to watch, enjoyed it from start to finish. The individual match-ups and team play were a pleasure to watch from both teams. Bynum /M Gasol, Kobe/Allen, P Gasol/Speights, Blake/ Conaly. The Memphis team is going to be a tough team in the playoffs when they get Zack Randolph back.
