Hello, Gerard Wallace…..Nets!!

The Nets wasted no time in going to plan B at today’s trade deadline. Jersey didn’t acquire DH from Orlando, but the Nets did add another All-Star on their roster…..Gerard Wallace.
Here’s the way I view this fall back move from GM Billy King and Nets management.
GOOD: Gerard Wallace is a good player. “Crash” is known for his tough defense, ability to run the floor and finish on the break. Wallace is also strong rebounder who will the anchor the small forward position. Given the Nets another aggressive player to match-up with Kris Humphries. Wallace’s finishing ability will also mix well with point guard Deron Williams. “Crash” has one year left on his contract after this season at 9.5 million giving the Nets an opportunity to trade him in the future or let him finish out his commitment to the Nets in 2013.
BAD: Losing Okur & Williams won’t affect the Nets much on the court. Yet, both players combined will move 13 million dollars off of Portland’s books at the end of this season. Still, the most interesting part of this deal is the protected 1st round pick that the Blazers will receive from the Nets. It’s an interesting gamble for New Jersey. If the Nets manage to get a top 3 pick this year, they can keep the selection. If the Nets are selected outside of the first three slots, the pick will head to Portland. As it stands today, that pick would be in the 5 – 7 range. Players like Harrison Barnes or Perry Jones should be available for the taking. With two 1st round picks, the Nets believe that giving one of them away is a smart idea.
ANALYSIS: I view this trade as a lateral move. Wallace will help the Nets in the short term. He will come in, play hard and not say too much about the situation. Yet, I just hope that losing a draft pick won’t mean losing the next “superstar” from this year’s draft class. Most of all, I’m not convinced that this move alone will entice D-Will to re-sign. Only time will tell, if this trade is a reason for Williams to stay or if this will mark the start of yet, another Nets rebuilding process.
