Invasion of the body snatchers…Celtics injuries continue to mount

If you are 6’10 and over the Boston Celtics want you! Even 6’8 or 6’9 will do.
But beware injury is likely soon to follow if you don the green and white and have height.
The Celtics can’t catch a break unless it is one to the body of someone in their front court. Injures lurk like the boogeyman and continue to snatch bodies away from the roster leaving Doc Rivers wishing he were just a little bit taller to suit up himself.
On Monday the Celtics announced that Jermaine O’neal will have season ending wrist surgery just one week after Chris Wilcox was ruled out for the year with an aortic heart condition.
JO sounded like retirement was on the way in his series of tweets shortly following the official announcement:
It was truly a blessing and honor playing for 5 great organization and living in 5 fantastic cities! Thank you guys for everything!
I’m not sure what my basketball future is, but I want to thank the cities of portland, indiana, miami, toronto, and boston for 16great years
Some times in life you are dealt a hand that you are not sure why, but I know its all in god plans and I know it will be the best plan!
The pickings are slim with regards to available big men for Boston to replace the losses of O’neal and Wilcox. The Celtics were hoping that Hornet’s center, Chris Kaman, would have been bought out but reports continue to surface that he will remain with the team and may even re-sign.
Josh Powell, Ryan Hollins, and Kyrylo Fesenko are the “murders row” of available big men the Celtics are now reportedly interested in. Rony Turiaf is also available.
Powell and Hollins are the most offensively polished and by polished I mean like dress shoes in a sand storm. While Fesenko is more of a brooding bruiser type of big with limited offensive capability.
Without knowing much about where Powell has been recently I would tend to think that Hollins and Fesenko would be good fits. Hollins is athletic and would give the team some much needed “spring” on the fast break with Rajon Rondo. While Fesenko could bang and hopefully limit the opponent’s offensive rebounding opportunities.
Now that you have finished yawning at those possibilities, I will reiterate that a big is a necessity. Boston would be wise to grab two of them if possible especially with the unrelenting bad luck they have experienced with front court representatives this season.
Team Green has been in contact with multiple bigs since the beginning of the season only to watch them get snatched up by the competition for varying reasons. David West, Reggie Evans, Joel Przybilla were all targets of the Celtics and all decided against taking up season’s residence in Boston.
I have been beating the need for a big drum for a while and thankfully the Celtics know something must be done. Now it’s just a matter of who, when, and not being beat out by the competition for their services.
