Lakeshow Sweep Defending Champs

The Los Angeles Lakers snap a 2-game losing streak by defeating the Dallas Mavericks 109-93.

The Lakers needed this victory to get back on track, after losing at home to the Utah Jazz on Sunday, and on the road to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday. With the win in Dallas last night, the Lakers sweep the regular season series against the Mavericks 3-0.

It’s not exactly the NBA postseason, but it is some form of retribution for the Lakers, especially after what happened last year between these two teams in the playoffs.

The Black Mamba, flipped the script on his shooting woes scoring 30 points, with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Pau Gasol put on an efficient shooting performance, going 13-0f-16 from the field , finishing the game with 27 points and totaling 9 boards. Andrew Bynum had an off night, fresh off the heels of Tuesday’s ejection, failing to produce his usual double-double, scoring only 9 points, to go with 7 rebounds. That’s the beauty of having “Twin Towers”, because if one player has a mediocre day at the office, the other can make up for it. Matt Barnes came off the bench and contributed as well, scoring 11 points, and hitting timely three-pointers in the first half to increase the Lakers lead to double digits by halftime.

The X-factor in last night’s contest, was newly acquired point guard Ramon Sessions play off the bench. Playing in his fourth game for the Lakers, he scored 17 points, with 9 assists and 5 rebounds. His scoring out-put was the most points he scored in a game since the trade.

Sessions does add a new dynamic to this team. He provides them with another consistent scoring threat, another player (outside of Kobe) that has the ability to penetrate deep into the lane, and allows The Mamba to play off the ball a lot more on offense. As Sessions, Bryant and the team in general strengthen their chemistry, it will be interesting to see the direction the new look Lakers are headed in.

The Lakeshow finish the week with home games against the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies. With roughly a month left in the regular season, all games are crucial as they look to shake the pesky Clippers for the Pacific division title, as well as possibly catch the Spurs for the #2 seed in the Western Conference. If the Lakers can play consistently on both ends of the floor like last night, then they will indeed become legitimate title contenders once again, but for now they still have more work to do.
