Hawks lose to Bulls

I just love talking about the schedule. Atlanta did win three in a row on three straight days (including that game with Utah that started Sunday and finished Tuesday). But after a day off, they lost consecutive games, first last night in Milwaukee and tonight to the Bulls. Chicago took control with a 33-19 second quarter and cruised to a 98-77 victory. Derrick Rose’s groin kept him out again, but they didn’t need him. Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer led Chicago in scoring (22 and 20), and the Bulls shot 46% while Atlanta mustered 40%. Josh Smith paced the Hawks with 19, while Jeff Teague had 13, and Joe Johnson contributed 12. The loss dropped Atlanta to 7 back of Miami in the Southeast. This ridiculous stretch of games concludes with another back-to-back, this time with New York and Philly this weekend. Maybe the team is running on fumes. Certainly, injuries have hit them hard. They’ve lost 107 games this season, the most of any of the Eastern contenders. (By contrast, Miami lost 29). A stat wizard, using math that would make me dizzy, concludes it’s about five wins gone because of it. That would be the difference between having the home court advantage in the first round. The Hawks have a lot of vets, so they feel they should win regardless, but it’s still something to keep in mind when Larry Drew and Rick Sund (GM) go to talk a new contract.
