EMU Just Needs to Stay Focused

YPSILANTI — There is something to believe in that old baseball adage that simply says a new day brings a new game.
Eastern Michigan University came home Tuesday night March 27, 2012 after absorbing a 13-4 defeat at the hands of the Ohio State University in the capitol city of the state of Ohio.
The Eagles had no time to reflect or feel sorry about the road trip to Bill Davis Stadium, Eastern Michigan University baseball coach Jay Alexander told his team before the game Wednesday afternoon March 28, 2012 against the University of Michigan to keep focus and just play the game.
Since the 1949 season Eastern Michigan University has faced the Wolverines more than any other team. The two squads have met 172 times and the University of Michigan controls the series with a record of 112-58-2.
The Eagles took control of the game by scoring five runs in the fourth inning and then added three more runs in the fifth inning.
Eastern Michigan University got a solid performance from the starting pitcher Jordan Glover and Alexander and the Eagles got production from the bullpen.
Collin Taylor came into the game in the fourth inning and picked up the intensity from his last appearance when he threw four and one third innings and struck out nine batters.
Taylor shut the door on the Wolverines by working two and one third innings facing eight batters and getting four to strikeout and he gave up just one hit in route in recording his first win of the season.
“It was out standing, I mean he did his job, he came in and he was focused,” Alexander said. “And that is the one thing that he struggled with out there. He would be a guy before that he would strike out a guy and come back in and it is all laughs and I did my job and came back out there and walk four straight.”
“We had to shut him up and get him focused” Alexander said about Taylor. “Get him ready to rock and he is starting to do that and that is the kind of production that we were looking for, that we are going to need out of a senior guy like that with that kind of arm. And if he can continue have that kind of arm for us, that will put us at another level and what we are trying to do win a MAC championship.”
Alexander is looking for more improvement as the season progresses from Taylor and the rest of the bullpen staff.
“Glover was okay,” Alexander said about his starting pitcher.
Glover worked three and two third innings and threw 80 pitches but the fastball darted and moved through the strike zone but Glover’s breaking ball seemed to have the Wolverines guessing at the plate.
Returning to a forum that Alexander is happy to see is relief pitcher Joe Battistelli.
“He is one of the most important key to our puzzle and him struggling has been a down fall,” Alexander said about Battistelli. “To get him going is key. He just needs to concentrate on pitching instead of throwing. He wants to light up the gun and before he was 85-87 with a plus curve ball and now he is 89-91 and he is trying to over throw his curve ball and over throw his fastball and he struggled but today he stay down. Unfortunate part of what is going on with him right now is he give up a lot singles and it is like oh man here we go so we got to keep him focused.”
“You are not going nowhere, you are going to do it and you are all right, you gave up a single that is all that he has been given up,” Alexander said. “He is getting better and he is throwing more strikes and that is the key to all of our pitching staff, we talked about that in the locker room and they came out focused.”
The Eagles offense roughed up the Wolverines for 11 hits, led by the 3 of 5 day from center fielder Bo Kinder and scoring four runs.
Kinder has reached base in 18 games and has an on base percentage of .396 so far this season.
Designator hitter Lee Longo and third baseman Brent Ohrman both had two hits and both knocked in three runs including Ohrman base loaded triple in the fourth inning, his fourth triple of the season.
Eastern Michigan University will continue the Mid-American Conference schedule this weekend March 30 – April 1, 2012 with another road trip into the state of Ohio.
The Eagles will play Ohio University in Athens, Ohio with the first pitch of the three game series scheduled to float across home plate Friday night at 6 p.m.
Alexander is hoping that the Eagles will remain focus on the first order of business and that is to take care of business in the Mid-American Conference.
