Joakim Noah had a very solid all around game for the Bulls with 19 points and 12 rebounds in their low scoring 83-71 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night. Luol Deng was the team leader in scoring with 20 points and he also added 9 rebounds as every starter aside from Ronnie Brewer posted a double digit scoring effort. This was a low scoring game and a big reason for that is the low output of bench points with the Bulls outscoring the Pistons a measly 16-7 and both teams didn’t have their best shooting nights as the Bulls shot 42.7% and the Pistons only shot 36.9% in the losing effort. One positive that the Bulls can take out of this game, besides the win, is the fact that they continue to outrebound their opponents as they did so tonight 53-37 which is a big margin and usually limits the second chance opportunities. Also, the Bulls can look at the fact that their defense continues to be solid all around and one of the stingiest as far as giving up points in a game. The Bulls force contested shots, make players force passes, and create turnovers which is what a good defense and team need to do if they want to make a run for the NBA Championship.
The Bulls improved to 42-11 on the year after this victory and 14-5 on the year without their star player Derrick Rose. Rose missed his ninth straight game with a groin injury but the Bulls were able to still come out on top as Coach Thibodeau continues what has been a spectacular display of coaching and should have him high in the race for coach of the year. Playing without the reigning MVP for nineteen games is a tough task and Thibodeau has his team at a 14-5 mark without Rose. The Bulls are by far not better off without Rose but Coach Thibodeau’s philosophy allows for success when a star player is out but I do not believe that would be the case come playoff time. Playoff basketball is taken to a new level and the Bulls will need Rose back if they want to make it through the top Eastern Conference teams and get to that NBA Championship final.
I believe that Rose needs to get back soon and get a handful of games in before the playoff start so that he can get his legs under him and be in a groove when it comes playoff time. Rose is important to the team and I believe the chemistry amongst the team will be there no matter when Rose comes back but in my opinion he needs to come back before the end of the regular season, as long as he is healthy just to shake off some rust he may have from sitting out. In the case that the injury is not healed enough you do play it safe and hold him out until playoff time.
