The NBA’s highest scoring duo ran right through the older Los Angeles Lakers last night. The Oklahoma City Thunder won 102-93 Thursday night. Laker fans watched as Russel Westbrook sliced threw the aging Lakers by scoring 36 points with 6 assist. Kevin Durant also contributed with 21 points 11 rebounds and 5 assist. The Lakers showed signs of their age as the much younger Thunder team scored 25 fast-break points which led to a 19 point lead. Kobe Bryant scored 23 points and added 9 rebounds but he went 7-25 in that span he shot 0-5 in the third quarter. That is a horrible shooting percentage by any standard. Kobe shooting struggles was not the only problem throughout the game. When Metta World Peace shoots 3 of 13, and Pau Gasol goes 4 of 11 your not gong to win games; POINT. BLANK. PERIOD.
Kobe Bryant had this to say after the game:
“We did a pretty good job in the half court, but the offensive rebounds that gave
them second opportunities and transition baskets killed us. “Every time we give up
that many offensive rebounds, we lose pretty much every game. They have younger legs then we do”
Kobe noticed how well Westbrook was playing and says:
“Russell Westbrook established the tempo in the third quarter, and he changed
the pace of the game for them, “He’s one of my favorites. He’s
developed his outside shot a great deal, and he went to the post a little bit as
well, so he’s a problem.”
Lets examine the term “Young” in the sense of NBA teams, mainly the Lakers. Kobe, Gasol,Peace,Blake,Barns all in their 30′s just can’t run with the younger teams of the NBA. Westbrook scored against them as if the Lakers were a senor citizen team playing against a AAU All-Star Team. When running a relay who do you want on your team, Westbrook, Durant, Harden, Ibaka or Kobe,Gasol,Blake, Bynum? The average age of Laker players, who actually played in the game was 29, while the average age of the Thunder was 26. If you take in consideration Ivy (31) and Mohammed (34) only played a combined total of 11 minutes and take them off the teams age average falls even lower. When you have younger legs you have that extra spring in your jump, and a gear you can turn to when your opponent switches into overdrive. The Lakers need to find some younger players next season in order to compete with the NBA’s elite teams, who all have young talent.
A small glimmer of hope came from the young Andrew Bynum. He lead the Lakers with 25 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant struggled at the start, going a
combined 3-15 in the first quarter as the Thunder were outscored by 12.
Westbrook and Durant caught fire from that point, making 20 of 34 shots as OKC
outscored the Lakers by 21 the rest of the way
