Uncle Mel wants to Know Is It Over Yet?

ROMULUS, Mich. — Oh man Uncle Mel can not believe his eyes as he stares at the comical calendar and sees that it is Sunday April 1, 2012 and what in the world is Uncle Mel doing in the office on a Sunday?

Your old Uncle Mel is working the weekend and wondering if the 2012 college basketball season will ever be finished.

Oh yes, yes Uncle Mel recalls that the 2012 Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball season ended right on time dropping out of the Mid-American Conference Basketball Tournament like a stone thrown into the muddy water of the Huron River -sunk quickly out of sight.

Remember nieces and nephews the disappointment we all felt watching the league’s West Division winner and seeded No. 5 fall flatter than a pancake to a team that only won three conference games all season, the agony of the defeat to Northern Illinois University still irritates Uncle Mel like a pebble inside his low cut Chuck Taylor’s Converse shoes.

The sight of the Huskies running off of the Convocation Center basketball floor after securing the 55-52 victory only made the 843 basketball fans that watched the debacles shake there heads in unison in disbelief and make the blood pressure rise up to a boil – to a dangerous level.

Do you know what happen in Cleveland to the mighty Northern Illinois University Huskies after the boarded there team’s bus and departed Ypsilanti and made the trip across the Ohio Turnpike and to the city that graces the shore line of Lake Erie and is the home of the Mid-American Conference?

Well let your Old Uncle Mel give you a clue, they were waxed by Western Michigan University 71-54 on the floor at the Quicken Arena!

Western Michigan University felt the sting of defeat by the Eagles twice during the season including winning the West Division on the home floor of the Broncos.

Uncle Mel only brings this up because the end of the college basketball season will officially come to a finish Monday night, April 2, 2012 in the city of New Orleans on the basketball court  inside the Superdome between the University of Kentucky and the University of Kansas a chance to see a couple of basketball rich tradition programs play for the title.

There is no hard feelings against the Wildcats or the Jayhawks but Uncle Mel wonders what would be like if a team from another conference, a team from what the NCAA labels as mid-major conference – would there be an investigation or acceptance?

Would it be acceptable-for example a team from a hard working community like Ypsilanti, Michigan and would represent the Mid-American Conference and did all the right things on and off the court and won the crown of the NCAA basketball or would the earth stop spinning and a certain place actually have a change in the weather and freeze.

An Eastern Michigan University basketball fan can only dream about that and play many games on a gaming system of choice because really would the NCAA allow this mircle on the basketball court.

Nieces and nephews remember the run that Butler University made making an appearance in the final four, the Bulldogs lost the game and that is true but remember feeling the excitement during the games that Butler played, it made it watch able and many basketball fans found themselves cheering for the underdog it made the tournament fun to watch.

Are we really excited about watching two basketball programs that are rich in NCAA basketball?

The tournament is suppose to be fun and watching a team rise up from out of a mid-major conference, a special team that make some kind of a statement that makes the media and sports fans sit up and take notice, Uncle Mel says that this year’s tournament really is uneventful.

The University of Kentucky with a line up of as many as four or five NBA basketball players including Anthony Davis and a coach who know enough to say just enough to guide this team and then just stay out of there way and let the skill level unfold in front of the many basketball fans and the world.

The University of Kansas is a team that has enough talent to come from a 13 points deficit against the Ohio State University and to defeat the Buckeyes 62-61 while turning smiling eyes into crying eyes might have enough momentum to force Kentucky into a bad game.

Uncle Mel says not likely!

Monday night, April 2, 2012, Uncle Mel will be found sitting and relaxing in his office inside the News Gathering Office Building located in the city that is the gateway to the downriver area and to the world.

The office television tuned in, the office light turned down and the pizza box open releasing the sweet smell of fresh pizza filling the room.

When the clock strikes midnight the 2012 college basketball season will officially come to end and the Eastern Michigan University basketball team, fans and coaches can return to the world.
