Building A Monster

When Colts players showed up at the 56th St complex to start the new season they were issued T-shirts reading “Building A Monster”. I don’t care who you are, you have to love that. Whether you can believe it or not only time will tell.

I’m a defense guy. I absolutely love great defenses. Don’t get me wrong, it was amazing watching Peyton throw perfect passes, and Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark making unbelievable catches. But what excited me most were the Freeney and Mathis sacks, the tackles in the backfield, the big hits. Bob Sanders (man I miss that guy), Antoine Bethea busting up receivers over the middle. Watching games, I would raise my arms when Manning connected on long TD passes, but big hits and sacks brought me out of my chair.

So when I see themes like “Building A Monster” it makes me grin just a little bit. I may be dreaming a tad here but can you imagine Andrew Luck with a dominant defense. When the Colts won Super Bowl XLI, it was the defense (with the exception of the AFC Championship) that got them there, not Peyton. That first play of the first playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs set the tone for a Super Bowl run that we will never forget. Larry Johnson ran right … 3 yard loss. The Chiefs never recovered and the Colts went on to do the same thing in Baltimore. But prior to that game and after that year the defense was inconsistent at best, horrible at worst. If the Colts had half the defense Baltimore did through the Manning years there would have been multiple Lombardi trophies encased at Colts headquarters. I had the opportunity to handle the trophy and I also was able to try on one of the Super Bowl rings, I’d like to do that again, and again.

It would seem that whan you talk about monsters, a brutal running attack also comes to mind. The Colts have had good, sometimes very good running backs, but with number 18 there was never a need for a “brutal” runner. Coach Pagano has stated that he will utilize a fullback, removing a tight end (I would assume). Big linemen, big fullback, dominant defense, Andrew Luck ….. one can dream, can’t he?

Obviously the current roster is in no way set up for this, so it will be interesting to see how this all develops. I don’t think it will happen soon enough for some fans but if we, as fans, have a little patience and faith I believe this can be a lot of fun. Today I’m an optimist, tomorrow I may be a pessimist, but if this goes the way I think (hope), I will be coming out of my chair on a regular basis.

So build the monster Mr. Irsay, show Indianapolis you’re a nutty genius, not just nutty.
