Spring training stats mean absolutely nothing. Coming in tonight’s season opener, Jered Weaver had a spring ERA of nearly 6. Bruce Chen’s spring ERA was close to 10.
What did those 2 do? They combined to throw 14 scoreless innings, while striking out 14.
The Angels vaunted offense was completely shut down by Chen, who gave up just 3 hits in 6 innings. Halos came close to pushing over a run in the 1st, but Albert Pujols lined into a double play. I wonder if on that play lead runner, Howard Kendrick, thought, “All that money, and that’s the best you got”. I am joking, of course.
I am not a fan of a pitcher throwing a complete game on opening day, but Weaver had thrown only 97 pitches through 8 innings. Most starting pitchers go over the 100 pitch mark in their 2nd to last spring start. It still makes me wonder if Mike Scioscia trusts his pen, which includes the rarely reliable Kevin Jepsen and Rich Thompson. Ok, that’s not fair. It’s a new season, so I’ll give those two another chance.
Loved the energy at the stadium. Pujols must feel like a conquering hero, with all the ovations he received. He must feel reenergized as well. The Cardinal fans are some of the best in all of sports, but there is nothing like a new crowd showing love on opening night.
Peter Bourjos just reached on little squibber, scoring Alexei Amarista with the Halos first run of the season. Bourjos runs like the wind and is so dangerous. Erick Aybar just hit a bases clearing triple, making it 4-0 Angels.
I keep hearing how versatile the Rangers are, but the Angels are the same. Speed, power and from what I’ve seen in 1 game, patient.
Pujols gets an intentional walk in the 8th, so he’ll finish 0-3 in his Angels debut. Weirdly, the only Halo without a hit. Didn’t realize he’d be such a liability with the bat–haha.
feel bad for Mark Trumbo. The “new” third baseman committed an error on the first ball hit to him. Later, on he overran Yuniesky Betancourt’s popup, and on the next pitch watched the Royals shortstop single. It’s all water under the bridge when the team wins.
Love the team, and the excitement they bring to the field, but Fox Sports is gonna kill me.
How many times do I need to see the promo for Angels weekly, hosted by Alex Curry. I am all for woman getting a chance to shine, but is there any way they can hire someone who looks older than a high school kid.
Same goes with the new Fox girls. I guess signing, maybe, the best player in baseball wasn’t enough. We as fans need to see a couple attractive children because our attention span is so limited.
Beautiful women have a place anywhere, but wasn’t the purity of baseball enough at one time.
A couple weeks ago in Arizona, I talked to couple of good looking women who said they hate to be judged by their looks. Fox Sports continues to do just that, and it’s not gonna get better anytime soon.
Thankfully, Weaver didn’t come out and throw the 9th. I guess 8 inning with 10 strikeouts was enough. Scott Downs finished things up and the Angels won 5-0. We may see about 100 more of these.

O'kay I'll talk about myself a little. I've been working in the television/radio industry for over 21 years. I started at 2 so I am just a tad over 21 (That is a joke). My career has taken me around and and even out of the United States. Right now I call Vegas home, but I just never know where life will take me next. Until 2002 my irrational love for the California/Anaheim/LAA had taken me down some very dark roads, but with Arte Moreno in charge I finally saw the a light at the end of the road. I really love most every sports and having as much fun as possible.
