YEAH BUDDY! The Blazers took the Dallas Mavericks into overtime once again, but this time they came out victorious after LaMarcus Aldridge hit a buzzer beater to win it 99-97! What an entertaining win.
Portland started out in a hole against Dallas like many of us thought they would. After the first quarter they were already down by 10. The second quarter faired better, but only by comparison as they were still outscored by two, making the halftime deficit 12. The third quarter is where things really took off. The Blazers used a 29-6 run to turn the deficit into an eight point lead. Raymond Felton was unconscious as he seemed to make every shot he took, including three 3-pointers in the final minutes of the quarter. They had the American Airlines Center dead silent, and everything was really clicking for them.
This is the point where I truly can’t understand what interim coach Kaleb Canales was thinking. He started the fourth quarter with Felton on the bench. In his place was Jonny Flynn. I get that coaches like to rest their starters at the beginning of the fourth, but in a tight game like this, and with Felton already having a season high in points, I don’t understand it. Not to mention he is the interim head coach and is fighting for his job as permanent head coach, which means he needs to win. Well, needless to say Flynn came in and it was a disaster. The Mavericks went on a 11-0 run to start the quarter to quickly take back the lead. Felton was checked back in with just four minutes gone by in the quarter. Longest four minutes ever. I really wasn’t sure if Portland could overcome that coaching mistake, and if Felton had possibly cooled off as he was on the bench.
Thankfully the offense started to click again once Felton (who finished with 30 points) got back onto the floor. Also at this point Aldridge started to reassert himself offensively. The game went back and forth from there, with the buzzer sounding as the score was tied. Once again, free basketball!
In overtime the Blazers seemed to have Dallas on their heels, but the Mavericks just wouldn’t go away. Plus they had a little help. An atrocious call with under two minutes left, in which the refs reviewed an out of bounds call but for some outrageous reason didn’t see that it was obviously off Dallas. I was watching the Mavericks’ telecast, and even their own biased announcers thought it was Blazers ball!
It’s fun to look back at that now, though, because the Blazers stayed tough and got a little luck of their own as Dirk Nowitzki air mailed a pass over the head of wide open Shawn Marion under the basket with just 18 seconds left and a tie game.
That lead to Aldridge’s 25th point, and the awesome video above.
I love the announcer’s “ugh” as Aldridge’s shot went through the net as the buzzer sounded. Fun game, and Portland has finally won back-to-back games for the first time in over two months. They’re definitely more fun to watch then they were prior to the team reshuffle. We have 10 more games to watch before the season comes to end for them. Hopefully they will all be as enjoyable as this one.
