YPSILANTI, Mich. — Well after putting Eastern Michigan University into the hot spotlight and placing the uncomfortable bull-eye square on Eastern Michigan University women’s Basketball program former coach for the Eagles AnnMarie Gilbert resign her duties Friday April 6, 2012.
Gilbert brought the NCAA investigatorsto the campus of Eastern Michigan University two years ago when she violated NCAA rules and regulations for practice time, recruiting violations and having to change her explanation to the investigators.
Former Gilbert’s staff and assistant coach encouraged former players not be forthright with the investigator.
The investigation from the NCAA is still in progress but Eastern Michigan University can avoid major sanctions if Gilbert is not associated with the program.
Gilbert leaves after five years with an overall record of 94-64 and a Mid-American Conference of 49-31, two West Division titles and one conference championship.
The Eagles made the trip to the NCAA Basketball Tournament this season as a No.12th seed and played the University of South Carolina.
The Gamecocks defeated the Eagles 80-48, in West Lafayette, Indiana at Purdue University.
“I would like to think AnnMarie for the success she has brought our program,” Eastern Michigan University Athletic Director Derrick Gragg statement said. “AnnMarie has worked hard to help our student-athletes succeed.”
Gragg will be looking to replace Gilbert quickly with qualified candidates.
Former assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University and is currently an associate head coach at Michigan State University with former Eagle basketball coach Suzy Merchant, Gragg is looking and hoping that Shane Clipfell would be interested in the position.
Clipfell is currently being considered for the head basketball coaching position at Western Michigan University.
University of Michigan associated basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit, Bowling Green State University associated coach Jennifer Roos and University of Detroit assistant coach Mike Geary are other coaching candidates.
