Dwight Howard’s herinated disk will keep him out indefinetely

The Orlando Magic released a troubling statement about the status of Dwight Howard on Friday evening:

Magic center Dwight Howard [1] was diagnosed by a doctor in Los Angeles with a herniated disk in his lower back…Magic spokesman Joel Glass said Howard was examined by Dr. Robert Watkins after Howard flew out there earlier Friday for a second opinion for what previously had been called back spasms since he injured his back at the end of March. There is no timetable for his return and it will be based on how he responds to treatment. Howard is scheduled to fly back to Orlando on Saturday.

Surgery is not in the all-star center’s immediate forecast as rest should be enough to heal his back.

The Magic are falling rapidly in the Eastern conference and this news just adds more drama to a very tense situation in Orlando. Howard will miss at least the next two weeks as the season comes to a close in the same time.

Where the Magic will be in the conference when he returns is of great concern seeing how the team is now 1-4 in his absence. Orlando can only hope losing doesn’t become the norm and  that they can hold off the surging Knicks down the stretch.
