Braves Sweep Brewers

I have to admit, I was worried when the Braves got swept out of Citi Stadium last week by the Mets. And then they dropped the first game of their set with Houston. These two teams are the worst in the NL. If you can’t beat them, well, I really don’t have to go there. But then Atlanta seemed to remember who they were playing. After taking the final 2 games from Houston, they came back and swept their home opening series, beating Milwaukee in a weekend set. The final came courtesy of a 7-4 victory this afternoon at Turner Field. Chipper Jones and Jason Heyward each hit home runs (both their second). Brandon Beachy gave up 3 hits in 7 innings for the win. He lowered his ERA to .75 and evened his record to 1-1. Here’s the promising thing. After pulling Beachy, Fredi Gonzalez didn’t use the normal bullpen of Johnny Ventners and Craig Kimbrel. He instead used Kris Medlin and Chad Durbin. Durbin allowed three runs in the ninth, but I like the philosophy. He’s limiting the innings of his stars and keeping them safe for the stretch. Also, Jones played in his first game in the homestand. He’s definitely providing his boost, as the three-run homer indicates. The Mets come in tomorrow, and Atlanta wants some payback for what happened the first week of this season. Again, you have beat the Mets when you can, as who knows how you’ll fare against the Nats, Fish, and Phillies.
