EMU Concludes Spring Football

ROMULUS — The time of the season is officially changed, it is spring time in the city were the world can arrive knocking on the door to borrow something from you like a good neighbor.

The news gathering office is slowing down from the feverous pace of an exciting but disappointing basketball season and a football season that fired up the imagination to the promise of crossing into milk and honey of the football promise land, to a gentler and kinder way of baseball.

You’re good old Uncle Mel traveled to the city of Ypsilanti bright and early Sunday morning April 15, 2012 to watch some spring football action at the home of the Eastern Michigan University Eagles-Rynearson Stadium.

The crowd of people had gathered and the excitement seemed to be in the air just like the rain drops that fell from the overcast sky.

Uncle Mel got closer to the excitement, he could hear people making deals because the concourse was turned into a bizarre, people buying Eastern Michigan University athletic memorabilia.

A chance for Eastern Michigan University athletic fans to buy and wear what the Eagles wear, a chance to add jerseys of any sport, green and white travel mugs and equipment used or new to add to somebodies collection of Eastern Michigan University memories.

Since the rain gave away to lighting in the Huron River Valley the start of the Spring Football game was delay which helped the Athletic Department Garage Sale.

Oh yeah nieces and nephews the game did finally take place and Eastern Michigan University football team did take the field and it seemed to be just not an exercise of going through the motion of a practice.

The White Team won the contest, 8-7 in a scoring system that awarded points to both squads.

Both sides of the ball hit each other hard but with the positive things being watched by Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English witnessed- he saw things that he did not like.

“I loved the offensive line” English said after the game. “I think we have depth there and I think we are going to be pretty good up front.”

The defense side of the ball did well but the question of the defensive backfield is beginning to keep English and Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator Phil Snow some long summer days and endless summer nights wondering and hoping for a miracle.

“The worst thing I saw today was our eyes on defense,” English said about the performance of the defense. “The defensive front is coming along, the linebackers are decent the safety position we are a long way to go!”

During the spring and summer English will be working in his office that has been remodeled and busy recruiting and keeping the Eagles competitive in the Mid-American Conference.

“We are further along in our development overall,” English said. “I think we have a chance. I think we have to get a lot better like everybody at this time of the year. I believe that if we play well, we will have a chance.”

Uncle Mel did his best to find any kind memorabilia in the sale but like the Eagle defensive back field it was just another act of futility.
