ANN ARBOR, Mich. —- The battle for baseball diamond supremacy in Washtenaw County this season belongs to the Eastern Michigan University baseball team.

The Eagles put together just enough hits that produced just enough runs to defeat the University of Michigan, 7-2 in front of a l0ud crowd of 899, Wednesday night, April 18, 2012 at Ray Fisher Stadium inside the Wilpon Baseball Complex on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Eastern Michigan University scattered seven hits and took advantage of the mistakes made by the Wolverines pitchers.

University of Michigan baseball coach Rich Maloney said his team just gave away too many freebies.

“They struggled and we gave away freebies and if you give freebies like that to Eastern Michigan, they had seven runs and five hits,” Maloney said about his pitcher’s performance against the Eagles. “Not only the freebies, the walks but the passed balls and the wild pitches. We handed them the game.”

The Wolverines pitchers threw a total of eight walks, three wild pitches and the University of Michigan starting catcher Zach Johnson allowed his third pass ball of the season.

The key play of the game described by Maloney and it happened in the third inning.

Eastern Michigan University defense pulled off a triple play to get the Eagles starting pitcher Collin Taylor a much needed boost of confidence.

The University of Michigan offense got runners on first and second base when Wolverines left fielder Coley Crank hit a hard line drive that found the glove of Ben Magsig.

Magsig reached out and tagged out Patrick Biondi and then Magsig threw a strike across the diamond to first baseman Sam Ott to retire John DiLaura and end the threat and the inning.

“I think I had one when I was at Ball State it was unfortunate from our stand point,” Maloney said about the triple play. “He hits the ball hard if that goes in there we score two runs who know what would happen.”

Maloney said his team has been in too many close games and the Wolverines record can be different instead of 16-22 overall record.

“A hit here and a hit there and the record would be flipped,” Maloney said. “We are playing a lot of guys that ordinarily would not play due to so much injur,y offensively we are three guys down with that being said we just have to execute better.”

Alexander said his pitchers need to show him something out on the mound each time they take the ball and the Eagle starting pitcher Taylor showed that he might be ready to make a strong contribution from the hill.

Taylor did work five innings and striking out four while walking three plus the triple play in route to his second win of the season.

“We did do something wrong on the mound but our guys battled,” Alexander said about his pitchers against the University of Michigan. “We need him (Taylor) to eat up some innings and he did, he was shaky at times and very good at others. We are going to need him moving forward in the league and if he can throw when he threw good- then we will be fine.”

Eagles’ designator hitter Lee Longo and second baseman Austin Williams both had two hits leading the way for the offense.

“They held us down for the last six innings a little disappointed in my hitters about that,” Alexander said. “We took care of business when we need to and it worked out.”

The Eagles finish 3-2 against the Big Ten Conference.

Eastern Michigan University will continue the Mid-American Conference schedule this weekend April 20-22, 2012 at Ball State University.
