Cubs Win to End Six Game Slide

Recap: The Chicago Cubs snapped their six game losing streak with a 6-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds Saturday. The North Siders got off to an early start with four runs in the second inning. Both Darwin Barney and Steven Clevenger each had three hits a piece. Cubs starting pitcher Paul Maholm (1-2) got his first win of the season. After going down 1-0 early, allowing three of the first four batters to reach base in the first inning, Maholm found his stride and allowed no runs in his final five innings of work. Joe Mather and Starlin Castro combined to go 4 for 9 from the plate. Mather, who was replacing outfielder Marlon Byrd, had an RBI, a double, and scored a run. Castro put up two RBI’s along with a double and a triple. Unfortunately Castro’s error total is up to a league leading seven as he committed two more on Saturday.
Impact of Win: With their losing streak over, the Cubs look to finish this series off Sunday on a high note and get a victory. Hopefully Saturday’s win will breed some confidence into a pitching unit who had an ERA of 7.58 during this recent six game slide. Paul Maholm had a solid start winning his first game in nine months dating back to July 10 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Unfortunately Ryan Dempster will miss his start on Sunday after being placed the on the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s game with a quad injury. Dempster has been the most consistent pitcher this year on the Cubs starting rotation.
Team Notes: Centerfielder Marlon Byrd, who didn’t play on Saturday, has been traded to the Red Sox for Reliever Michael Bowden. Byrd has had a rough start to the season with a .070 batting average, no homeruns, two RBI’s, and an OBP of .179. Backup catcher Steve Clevenger has had a solid start to the season going 10 for 17 so far this year. Clevenger had three hits Saturday afternoon, but Cubs Manager David Sveum will go with starting catcher Geovany Soto for Sunday’s series finale with Reds.
Looking Ahead: The Cubs will be facing Cincinnati Red’s pitcher Johnny Cuteo on Sunday. Cueto is 1-0 with a 1.89 ERA this year. Randy Wells, who is filling in for Ryan Dempster, will be making his first start of the season. Wells has a career ERA of 4.01 with 27 wins and 30 losses.
