Tigers Win Nightcap

It was not the prettiest of wins, but the Tigers will take it. After losing a combined 20-7 in the first two games of the series the Tigers scratched their way to a 3-2 victory Saturday night.

Starter Justin Verlander (2-1) threw 115 pitches over just six innings of work, but only allowed one run and four hits. After five innings, and 101 pitches it appeared that Verlander’s night was over, but he returned to the mound in the sixth, and struck out two more to finish the night with eight strike-outs.

Tigers batting only managed three hits off of Rangers starter Neftali Feliz (1-1), who pitched a complete game for the loss. The fourth inning was the undoing for Feliz when he gave up two hits, and all three Tigers runs. Feliz struck out six Tigers batters in the loss.

After a scoreless seventh inning pitched by reliever Octavio Dotel things got interesting. Joaquin Benoit gave up one run on two hits in the eighth inning, and closer Jose Valverde walked two before finishing off the game with a Josh Hamilton strikeout. It was the fourth save of the season for Valverde.

These two teams finish off this four game series tomorrow with a 1:05 game at Comerica Park. The Rangers will send Colby Lewis (2-0, 1.83 ERA, 1.07 WHIP) to the mound against Drew Smyly (0-0, 0.90 ERA, 1.50 WHIP).
