Wizards Update: Closing Strong, 20 Wins

Don’t look now but the Wizards are playing their best basketball of the season.  At a time when most teams have either begun tapering for the playoffs or shut their season down for draft position, the Wiz have done the opposite.  Winners of five of their last seven games the Wiz have started to gel together and, at times, have resembled a professional basketball team.

For those of you who weren’t watching on Saturday night the Wiz beat the Heat in Miami 86-84 on a last second lay-in by Nene.  Granted, the Heat were resting Bosh and LBJ, and Dwayne Wade had to leave the game three minutes in due to a finger injury, but again, the Wiz will take a win when they can.

With that win the Wizards improved to 17-46on the season.  Say what you will about this tumultuous season, but with three games remaining it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Wiz could reach twenty wins.  I may be getting ahead of myself but when looking at the remaining schedule, looking at the way the team has come together these last two weeks, and thinking about how most of the NBA has shut things down for the year; getting to twenty wins is a goal worth striving for.

I never envisioned, as a Wizards fan, that reaching twenty wins this late in the season was something I would care about so much, but it’s all I got.  John Wall, Kevin Seraphin, Cartier Martin, and Jordan Crawford have all sweat and bled for this organization this season.  They’ve sat through a coaching change, fan apathy, player immaturity, trades, and injuries, but all of them have come out better on the other side.  Forget draft order and lottery ping-pong balls; next year means nothing to these players.

Tonight the Wiz play the Bobcats as they try to reach win #18.  The Cats (7-56)…well, they’ve had a rough year.  Losers of 20 straight games, the Cats need one win in their last three games to avoid becoming the worst team (by winning %) in the history of the NBA.  The Bobcats have struggled to reach seven wins.  They’re tired, injured, fighting with each other, and couldn’t be tanking more obviously (as they try to secure the #1 overall selection in the upcoming draft).

The Wiz are 3-0 against Charlotte this season and hope to sweep the season series tonight.  Along with that the Wizards have won three straight games and hope to win their fourth, it would be the first time the Wiz have won four games in a row since 2007 (yikes).

Following tonight’s’ game the Wiz will have two more chances to improve their record.  Wednesday at Cleveland and Thursday at home against the Heat to close the season out.  The Cavs have been competitive this season and will surely give the Wizards a tough fight.  Depending on what Miami does with that last game (rest starters vs play everyone) the Wiz have a legitimate shot at 20 wins.

Who would’ve thought that a month ago?

Hang in there guys!  Only three games left.
