NFL Mock Draft with analysis

NFL Mock Draft with analysis

  1. 1.   Indianapolis Colts- Andrew Luck Quarterback Stanford

This pick has been obvious for some time now.  The Colts will draft Luck and he will be their next Peyton Manning.  He is one of the most complete quarterback prospects ever.  This guy has it all, mentally and physically he is a lock to be a bona fid star in the NFL

  1. 2.   Washington Redskins- Robert Griffin III Quarterback Baylor

The Redskins gave up a whole treasure trove worth of picks to get Griffin, and he is worth it.  Griffin possesses an incredible understanding of the game and has the speed of a sprinter (he used to be one).  At one point in the beginning of the season he had more touchdowns than incompletions.  He is smart and knows when to run, throw, or throw it away.

  1. 3.   Minnesota Vikings- Matt Kalil Offensive Tackle USC

As much talk as there has been about the Vikings not going in this direction, they will.  Christian Ponder got hit so many time last year because of poor O-line play.  They do not want their prized quarterback to lose his confidence.  Kalil can be their left tackle for the next decade, and they cannot pass on that.

  1. 4.   Cleveland Browns- Trent Richardson Running Back Alabama

Richardson brings an explosiveness that the Cleveland offense has not seen in a while.  He is quick while also being a great runner in-between the tackles.  He also has great open field vision and moves.  He is a perfect fit for a Cleveland offense that lacks explosiveness.

  1. 5.   Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Morris Claiborne Cornerback LSU

Morris Claiborne is a stud cornerback.  He is probably a better coverage man than Patrick Peterson who was his teammate last year and was drafted 5th overall.  Claiborne may not be as good a return man, but he sure is a great cover corner.  The Bucs need serious help at cornerback, because Aqib Talib may be facing jail time and Ronde Barber could be moving to safety.  This puts the Bucs in a position to get Claiborne, who could be a shutdown corner next to Eric Wright.

  1. 6.   St. Louis Rams- Justin Blackmon Wide Receiver Oklahoma State

In my opinion Blackmon is the best wide receiver in the draft.  Although he did not have great offseason workouts if you look at his tape you cannot help but see his dominance.  The Rams also need a big play threat on offense to help Sam Bradford avoid regressing.

  1. 7.   New England Patriots- Melvin Ingram Defensive End South Carolina

I see the Jaguar trading down here while the Patriots give up their two first rounder’s (27 and 31) and a fourth rounder.  The Patriots have enough picks to make this trade to finally get a pass rusher.  The Patriots have been known to trade up using their other picks, and they have a bunch.  Ingram is the safest defensive end on the board and Belichek will love to have him.

  1. 8.   Miami Dolphins- Ryan Tannehill Quarterback Texas A&M

The Dolphins were losers in both the Peyton Manning sweepstakes and the Matt Flynn sweepstakes.  They need a quarterback for the future, and their owner has openly stated he wants the former wide receiver.  Tannehill has emerged as the obvious third quarterback to be taken and this is a quarterback desperate league.

  1. 9.   Carolina Panthers- Fletcher Cox Defensive Tackle Mississippi State

Cox’s stock has been rising with great workouts and a consistent game.  He is the top defensive tackle on my board.  Some people think Donario Poe should be drafted here because of his phenomenal workouts, but after seeing his film you have to think that Cox should be in front of him.

  1. 10.   Buffalo Bills- Michael Floyd Receiver Notre Dame

Floyd may be the most pro ready receiver in this draft class, as he caught 100 balls last year.  Having Floyd across from Stevie Johnson will be key for a good offense for years to come.

  1. 11.   Kansas City Chiefs- David DeCastro Guard Stanford

DeCastro is the top guard coming out of college and will be a top guard in the pros for the next decade.  He may not be an especially big need for the Chiefs, but he is such a great overall player it will be hard for the Chiefs to pass on him here.

  1. 12.   Seattle Seahawks- Luke Kuechly Linebacker Boston College

Pete Carroll will be extremely happy when Kuechly falls to the Seahawks.  Kuechly is a tackling machine who can go sideline to sideline.  He will dramatically improve the defense and has the potential to be a Pro-Bowler as early as his rookie season.

  1. 13.   Arizona Cardinals- Stephon Gilmore Cornerback South Carolina

Gilmore is a physical corner who plays against the best in the SEC.  He has shown flashes of greatness and a good understanding of the game.  He will be a great backfield combo with Patrick Peterson for years to come.

  1. 14.   Dallas Cowboys- Donario Poe Nosetackle Memphis

Poe is a workout warrior who has tremendous potential.  Rob Ryan would love to have a talent like him playing the nosetackle, as he is a monster with tremendous talent.

  1. 15.   Philadelphia Eagles- Quinton Coples Defensive End North Carolina

Coples has the ability to be a top 10 pick easily, but character and work ethic issues have made his stock tumble.  He still has tremendous talent and can be very productive if a coach can get him to mature.

  1. 16.   New York Jets- Alshon Jeffery Wide Receiver South Carolina

I see the Jets surprising a lot of people and taking the big talented wide receiver who like the pick before him has some character issues.  He can be a big target in the redzone and a great blocker.  The Santonio Homes project has not worked out and the Jets need to give Sanchez big targets after giving him a big contract extension.

  1. 17.   Cincinnati Bengals- Riley Reiff Offensive Line Iowa

The Bengals have a lot of options here as they have another pick soon.  This pick is more about solidifying an already good offensive line and providing depth.  Some people think Reiff will play guard because of his short arms tand since the Bengals need a right guard so he could slide in there for them.

  1. 18.   San Diego Chargers- Stephon Hill Wide Receiver Georgia Tech

Although the Chargers got Robert Meachem in free agency, he will not make up for the loss of Vincent Jackson.  Fortunately for the Chargers Stephon Hill is another freakish athlete who has Calvin Johnson-like potential.  He still needs to work on his route trees and other fundamentals, but if he can master those, watch out.  Phillip Rivers is smiling when the Chargers make this pick.

  1. 19.   Chicago Bears- Michael Brockers Defensive Tackle LSU

Having already filled their need for a wide reciver by trading for Brandon Marshall they now can shore up their defensive line.  Brockers is a solid player against the run and pass.  Together with Julius Peppers, this could be one of the top pass rushing duos in the league.

  1. 20.    Tennessee Titans- Dre Kirkpatrick Cornerback Alabama

After losing Cortland Finnegan in free agency the Titans need a good corner to replace him.  Kirkpatrick, like Finnegan, is a tough physical corner (he is 6’2 186) and has a lot of potential.  His charges have been dropped and he is trying to improve on his character issues, which is a good sign for teams.

  1. 21.    Cincinnati Bengals- Courtney Upshaw Defensive End Alabama

I see these Alabama teammates going back to back.  The Bengals could use an upgrade at defensive end and I think they will see Upshaw as rated higher than Chandler Jones.  Upshaw’s elite play against top SEC offensive lines will pay off when teams see his film.

  1. 22.    Cleveland Browns- Cordy Glenn Offensive Tackle Georgia

Glenn is a versatile offensive lineman who could play guard or tackle on either side.  If the Browns believe in Colt McCoy they will give him a tackle to protect him from getting dangerous hits (ie James Harrison).  The decision comes down to whether they believe that Kendall Wright is only a slot receiver and doesn’t have much beside straight-line speed, or whether he can be more.  After having a bad combine the Browns don’t want to risk it.  Also Glenn will be able to make holes for Trent Richardson.

  1. 23.    Detroit Lions- Mark Barron Safety Alabama

Detroit needs a corner to replace Eric Wright in their pass happy division that has Greg Jennings and Brandon Marshall.  However it is too early to reach for Janoris Jenkins and they might believe they can trade up in the second round to get him.  They are very lucky though, because Barron who is the top safety by far, will slide to them.  Barron will slide in the draft simply because he is not that great of a player, he just happens to be the top safety.  Teams will draft more on needs in the later half of the first round.  I could also see a scenario where a team trades up in the late teens or early twenties to grab him.

  1. 24.    Green Bay Packers- Shea McClellin Linebacker Boise State

Green Bay trade up and swaps picks with the Steelers for a fourth rounder.  They do this because they desperately need a pass rusher, and seeing as how McClellin is a safe pick they don’t want any other team to take him.  He will provide sure tackling and the ability to rush the passer that Green Bay sorely lacked last year.  The Steelers realize that Dont’a Hightower will probably be around at 28 seeing as there is no other team with serious linebacker needs.

  1. 25.    Denver Broncos- Kendall Wright Wide Receiver Baylor

RGIII’s favorite teammate now becomes a target for Peyton Manning.  Wright is surprised that he slides this far, but happy that he gets Peyton Manning throwing to him.  This could be a dangerous duo for the next few years in the NFL.  The Broncos also have a huge need at Defensive tackle, but they believe that they can trade back into the late first round or early second round to get Jerel Worthy.  Another possibility is for them to get a top center by the same scenario.

  1. 26.    Houston Texans- Jonathan Martin Offensive Tackle Stanford

The Texans need offensive linemen after losing two to free agency.  And after seeing both Matt Schuab and Matt Lienart get hurt they need to address the offensive line.  Don’t be surprised if they trade Ben Tate to get a receiver or a top pick to draft one to help Andre Johnson.

  1. 27.    Jacksonville Jaguars- Amini Silatolu Offensive Line Midwestern State

Silatolu is an extrmeley versatile player, can play right tackle and both right and left guard.  The right side of the Jaguars offensive line was dreadful and contributed to Blaine Jabert taking over 40 sacks last season.  Many fans may be disappointed with this pick, but it is a good pick nonetheless.

  1. 28.    Pittsburg Steelers- Dont’a Hightower Linebacker Alabama

The Steelers still get the guy they want, Hightower.  Hightower is a very smart athletic linebacker who will fit in perfectly in Dick LeBeau’s system and can be their linebacker for the next ten years.  I can only imagine the ferocity of him paired with James Harrison.

  1. 29.    Baltimore Ravens- Peter Konz Offensive Line Wisconsin

This is a solid pick as the Ravens have a pretty old offensive line and Konz is very versatile and can play both the center and guard positions.  In my opinion, he is also the last remaining offensive lineman before a big drop-off.  He is a smart player who will develop into a very good offensive lineman whether it is at center or guard.

  1. 30.     San Francisco 49ers- Kevin Zeitler Guard Wisconsin

The 49ers have a lot of options with this pick because they do not have a big need position.  They could use this pick on Zeitler to upgrade their guard play.  I think that they may trade this pick to a team seeking to get back into the first round and get more picks.

  1. 31.     Jacksonville Jaguars- Janoris Jenkins Cornerback Northern Alabama

Jenkins may have top 15 talent, but character issues such as four babies with three different women and multiple pot possession arrests have dropped his stock.  Last year he was dismissed from Florida and got a fresh start at Northern Alabama were he was dominant.  He also had great workouts to go with good interviews.  The Jaguars need a corner and will get a steal talent wise here.

  1. 32.     New York Giants- Coby Fleener Tight End Stanford

Fleener is a very good pass catching tight end and a good blocker.  After losing Kevin Boss the Giants had no reliable tight end.  Also he could replace the catches Mario Manningham got and be Eli Manning’s new redzone target.  He is by far the best tight end available.
