Smyly Earns First Major League Victory

A day after the arrest of outfielder Delmon Young, and a ninth inning loss to the New York Yankees the Tigers rallied behind pitcher Drew Smyly on their way to a 7-5 victory. It was the first major league victory for the rookie Smyly, and snapped a five game losing streak for the Tigers.
Smyly (1-0) pitched brilliantly for six innings allowing two hits, and one run (a solo home run to Nick Swisher). He struck out seven Yankees before being pulled after giving up a single to Alex Rodriguez in the seventh in favor of Phil Coke.
The Tigers offense teed off on Yankees starter Freddie Garcia (0-2). Andy Dirks started the barrage with a three-run home run in the first inning. It was the first home run of the season for Dirks. The Tigers scored three more in the second inning before Garcia was replaced on the mound by Clay Rapada.
The Yankees bullpen kept the Tigers at bay allowing only two hits, and a solo home run to Miguel Cabrera in the eighth inning. It was his seventh of the season, and third RBI of the game.
Coke allowed a home run to Curtis Granderson in the seventh, and Octavio Dotel pitched a scoreless eighth before the drama started with Jose Valverde on the mound for the ninth. The inning opened with a second solo home run by Swisher, and Valverde allowed two more runs before getting Eric Chavez to fly-out to right field to end the game.
Smyly has been the most effective Tigers starter not named Justin Verlander. In four starts he has allowed only three earned runs, and has 22 strikeouts. He currently ranks first in the American League with a 1.23 ERA.
Young was placed on the restricted list prior to the game today, and the club recalled Danny Worth from Toledo. Young is facing a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge, and is undergoing alcohol and anger management evaluations after an incident early Friday morning in Manhattan. General Manager Dave Dombrowski has said that Young will play if cleared by the commissioner’s office.
The Tigers will play the finale of this three game series tomorrow in the Bronx. Max Scherzer (1-2, 8.24 ERA, 1.83 WHIP) will square off against Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia (2-0, 5.27 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) at 1:05 EST.
