Hawks take Game One.

Atlanta started the playoffs on a good note, beating the Boston Celtics 83-74. While the result was pretty, the game was anything but. Atlanta scored 31 points in the first quarter and didn’t get another 31 until the end of the 3rd quarter. Boston scored 18 in the opening frame, and tough defense kept the Celts at bay as the Hawks hold home court serve with this victory. Josh Smith led the Hawks with 22. Jeff Teague added 15 and Kirk Hinrich scored 12. For Boston, Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett each had 20. They and Paul Pierce each logged over forty minutes. For Atlanta, only Josh tallied that much. So Atlanta used more of their bench than Doc Rivers’ crew, and it showed in the shooting percentages. Boston could only muster 39% from the floor. Atlanta was a little better at 41%, but take a look at the three-point shooting. Atlanta was 7-20 from beyond the arc, but Boston clanged all of their 11 attempts. I’ve always said if you live by the three, you die by the three, and Boston certainly proved it tonight. Game 2 of the set will be Tuesday night, and it’s a must win for the Celtics, as they don’t want to go back north in a 2-0 hole.
