HEAT DEMOLISH KNICKS IN OPENER

There is an old cliche that “it’s only one game”, but if you are a New York fan the forecast looks bleak.  The Miami Heat broke open a tight game midway through the second quarter and never looked back, pummeling the Knicks 100-67.  They dominated New York on both offense and defense.  As bad as the game was for the Knicks, the loss wasn’t even the worst thing to come out of Sunday.  New York guard Iman Shumpert went down with a torn knee ligament and is out for the rest of the season, which at this point appears to be coming to an end for the Knicks.

LeBron James was the star of the game.  No surprise there.  What was a little unexpected though, was how thoroughly the Heat starters outplayed the Knicks starting unit.  The New York front line of Anthony, Chandler, and Stoudemire combined to go 5-25 from the field.  Miami’s “Big 3″ went 21-34.  Bron actually outscored the Knicks starting five 32-30 all by himself.  The Heat were efficient on offense and as the numbers indicate, stellar on defense.

What does a blowout like this mean?  Normally I would say not too much, but combined with the injury to Shumpert, this looks to be insurmountable for New York.  The Knicks biggest problem early in the year was the lack of good play from their guards.  Now with the aforementioned injury, the best option they have is a banged-up Baron Davis.  There has been speculation that Jeremy Lin could return if the series goes 6 or 7 games, but that is a fantasy.  The reality is that James, DWade, and any other Heat player you want to throw in there will be too much for New York.  This is a rivalry that may be reignited, but right now it’s going to be a little one-sided.  Expect the Heat to take a 2-0 series lead on Monday night.
