Packers fill defensive needs with draft

There is no doubt about it, the Green Bay Packers needed to draft for their defense and that’s exactly what they did this past week.

The Packers defense was historically bad last season and General Manager Ted Thompson realized the issues and addressed them with the NFL draft. First Thompson went out and selected DE/OLB Nick Perry from USC with the first pick to help the Packers with their terrible pass rush.

Perry is a great pick for the Packers and should help fellow OLB Clay Matthews receive less double teams then he did last year and bring a pass rush from another spot. Look for Perry to be a starter from day one with the Packers since he will only have to beat our Frank Zombo and Eric Walden, which realistically should not be too tough.

The next five picks were defensive as well. The Packers took DE Jerel Worthy from Michigan State who many had projected to be a late first rounder. It is expected that Worthy will be a disruptive force on the line and help take pressure off of NT B.J. Raji, as well as Matthews. Look for Worthy to be another starter for the Packers opening day.

The Packers selected two defensive backs in Casey Hayward from Vanderbilt and Jerron McMillian from Maine. Hayward is a solid pick for the Packers and could easily challenge corner Sam Shields for the nickle back as well as make a case to be the dime back as well. McMillian is a speed safety, who many questioned why the Packers drafted him so high, but the fact of the matter is Ted Thompson knows his players and finds talent late in the draft and in the free agent period after it.

The Packers also drafted DT Mike Daniels from Iowa, OLB Terrell Manning from NC State, OT Andrew Datko from Florida State and finished the draft with QB B.J. Coleman from Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Overall the draft was a solid B grade for the Packers. They addressed their defense but they failed to address depth at center and running back on offense. Now it’s the wait and see period for all of these players.
