Braves have nothing left

After last night’s classic, Atlanta had nothing left in the tank for today’s businessman special, and dropped the rubber game of their tilt with the Phils, 4-0. Atlanta mustered 3 hits against Joe Blanton, who only needed 88 pitches in going the distance. Blanton was helped by solo home runs by Shane Victorino and Laynce Nix. Atlanta now hits the road. This trip has three stops: Colorado (wait, weren’t we already on the West Coast last week?), Chicago, and St. Louis.
This series was an early meeting with the Phillies, who seem to be having trouble gaining traction in the division. They’re at .500, while Atlanta is a game-and-a-half in back of Washington. The question is, will the Phillies rebound? It’s way too early to make a pronouncement, but they’re pitching is so good it’s hard to discount them. I think they’ll be lurking, just waiting for the Nats to stumble. The last time Washington was in the thick of a pennant race, they were in Montreal. Let’s see how they’ll handle the pressure. Again, it’s way too early. Atlanta has yet to play them or the self-destructing Fish.
Couple of random notes: As you may have heard by now, Chipper won last night’s game with a mammoth home run. That gives him 4 on the season (McCann leads with 5). It appears he wants his farewell season to be memorable. So far, so good. Also, Michael Bourn is now hitting .324 with seven stolen bases. He’s been able to get on and is that leadoff threat the Braves wanted when they traded for him. As for the Jason Heyward reclamation project? He’s .282 with a .449 slugging. He’s also driven in 11 and leads the time in thefts with 8. It’s an early sample, to be sure, but early results look promising.
