YPSILANTI — Some series are just more important than others and this weekend series against Bowling Green State University at the friendliest corner in the Mid-American Conference is just that a big series because it will set the pace for the conclusion of the season and seeding at the Mid-American Baseball Conference Baseball Tournament.
The Eagles will be trying to make up the two game deficit that the University of Toledo is enjoying over the Eagles and Eastern Michigan University will also try and end a two MAC series losing streak.
Eastern Michigan University did not waste the chance Friday night May 4, 2012 defeating Bowling Green State University 10-3 and getting closer to the top of the West Division of the league.
Eastern Michigan University baseball coach Jay Alexander needed a strong performance from his starting pitcher and Neil Butara delivered a quality start and recorded his fourth win of the season.
Alexander also needed a solid approach at the plate and get a good defensive effort from the Eagles.
“It felt great we have finally played a complete game something we have not played in awhile” Alexander said about his team’s performance against the Falcons, “Our approach was better today than in while so that make it a little easier to hit at lease we were not chasing pitches out of the zone.”
Butara threw eight innings and struck out eight batters before giving the ball to relief pitcher Jeffrey Rousseau and he finished the ninth inning without any trouble from Bowling Green State University.
The offense shuck off a brief Bowling Green State University 2-0 lead in the third inning by sending 10 batters to the plate and scored five run waking up the faithful who follow Eagle baseball.
“Good approaches by everybody and we just stay the course,” Alexander said. “We were not phased by the two runs and we knew that we had to score more runs to win – just give us a chance.”
Eastern Michigan University led by designator hitter Sam Ott who hit two doubles and drove in four runs for the night.
Alexander moved Tucker Rubino into the second slot in the Eagles’ batting line up and Rubino responded with two singles and a base on balls for the Eagles.
Eastern Michigan University forced Bowling Green State University into making four errors.
“Defense is key to help you win or at lease keep you in the game,” Alexander said about the importance of playing a solid defense. “There are really no dominate team in the league and everybody is about the same so the one thing that you are going to have to do is play a steady defense.”
Falcons baseball coach Danny Schmitz did not like the effort from his defense and did not waste any time in making defensive changes.
Schmitz went to the bullpen to find an arm to replace his starting pitcher Matt Malewatz, who worked three innings gave up six runs and seven hits before Ben Singer came in from the bullpen.
Singer pitched 2.2 innings before handing the ball over to Chris Miller who finished the game for the Falcons.
Eastern Michigan University and Bowling Green State University will continue the series Saturday afternoon May 5, 2012 at Oestrike Stadium starting at 3 p.m.
“It is our goal and we have a chance to do something about it and we have got to continue to play better,” Alexander said about closing the gap on the University of Toledo.
