Walk-Off Win for Tigers

Jhonny Peralta picked a great time to hit his first home run of the season. The Tigers shortstop fouled off three pitches from Chicago White Sox reliever Matt Thornton (1-1) before belting a game-winning two-run home run to right field.
Most of the game was dominated by the pitching of starters Drew Smyly for the Tigers, and Jake Peavy for the White Sox. Smyly threw 99 pitches surrendering only two runs while striking out seven in six innings of work. The two runs raised his league-leading ERA to 1.61, and was the first game in which he allowed more than one. Peavy pitched 7 2/3 innings allowing three runs, and striking out six. He threw 122 pitches, the most he’s thrown in a game since joining the White Sox in 2009.
Before the fireworks of the ninth most of the Tigers offense was supplied by Alex Avila. Avila doubled in the second, and hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth. It was his third home run of the season, and Avila has six hits in his last three games. Avila tacked on a single in the ninth, setting up Peralta for the heroics.
Octavio Dotel gave up a two-run home run to Gordon Beckham in the seventh breaking up a 2-2 tie before Duane Below and Jose Valverde closed out the White Sox. Below has not given up a run this season in 12 innings pitched.
Before the game the Tigers activated Delmon Young from the restricted list, and designated Brad Eldred for assignment. Young addressed the media before Friday’s game, and was in uniform, but did not play. Manager Jim Leyland said he will use Young as a designated hitter this weekend.
Game two of this series is set for tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 4:05pm. Max Scherzer (1-3, 7.77 ERA, 2.05 WHIP) will start for the Tigers against Gavin Floyd (2-3, 3.13 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) for the White Sox.
