Cubbies Start Series Off Strong with 5-4 Win Over Dodgers

Recap:  After going 0-7 dating back to July of 2011, Cubs starting pitcher Paul Maholm (3-2) has begun to hit his stride.  With the Cubs 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday, Maholm has now won three consecutive starts.  He pitched six solid innings giving up one run on three hits.  Maholm also had no walks and struck out four.  Relievers James Russell and Kerry Wood gave up a combined three runs in the seventh and eighth  innings.  New closer, rookie Rafael Dolis, was able to record the save in the ninth to close out the game.  The Cubs had timely hitting as pinch hitter Joe Mather hit a solo shot in the sixth inning putting the Cubs up three runs.  David Dejesus was 3 for 4 and was a homerun away from getting the cycle.  Alfonso Soriano had a great game as well going 3 for 3, a walk, and two RBIs.  He drove in the final Cubs run that ended up deciding the game.

Impact of Win:  The Chicago Cubs are now 10-16 overall with Friday’s victory against the first place Los Angeles Dodgers.  The Cubs still remain in last place in the National League Central, but have won six out of their last ten games after having a rough start to the season.  Starting pitcher Paul Maholm has won three straight starts with a 1.48 ERA in those starts, and the Cubs hitters are providing run support coming through with clutch hits.

Team Notes:  Rookie closer Rafael Dolis completed his second save in three tries as he has replaced former closer Carlos Marmol. Ineffective play has haunted Marmol as he has blown three out of five save opportunities. Cubs manager Dale Sveum was forced to make a change.  Sveum was thrown out of Friday’s game after arguing whether or not Dodgers batter A.J. Ellis was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis.  First basemen Bryan LaHair continues to impress as he has now hit reached base safely in 22 games in a row.  Shortstop Starlin Castro continues to produce as well with a combined seven hits in the past four games.

Looking Ahead:  Saturday afternoon’s pitching match up will feature Cubs starter Chris Volstad who is 0-3 with an ERA of 6.11. He will be facing LA Dodgers starting pitcher Chris Capuano who is 3-0 with and ERA of 2.73.  Saturday’s game was supposed to feature Cubs starter Matt Garza, (2-1) but his start was pushed back until Sunday because he has been ruled out with an illness.
