YPSILANTI —- Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Eastern Michigan University celebrated the day with a 6-0 defeat against Bowling Green State University Saturday afternoon at Oestrike Stadium.
Eagles starting pitcher Steve Weber threw a complete game for his team helping the bullpen relax and get into the spirit of the day.
Weber only gave up four hits while striking out four Bowling Green State University batters while recording his sixth win of the season.
Eastern Michigan University baseball coach Jay Alexander said his hurler kept with the program.
“It is awesome to see it, you know he got a head of hitters,” Alexander said about Weber who earned his second shutout of the season. “It got a little hairy at the end but we were going to leave him out there no matter what it was his game to finish.”
“It great man just get ahead of hitters!” Alexander said. “Like I have told you guys you got to get ahead of hitters you got to win strike one aggressive hitter or even non-aggressive hitters if you get strike one that is a big strike.”
Eastern Michigan University offense took control of the game in the third inning by scoring three runs led by first baseman Lee Longo who turned on a fastball delivered by Falcon’s starting pitcher Ethan McKinney down the left field line for a double scoring Brent Ohrman and Tucker Rubino.
Eagle’s catcher Matt Hitt finished the game 2 of 3 including getting a sacrifice fly ball in the third inning.
Hitt recovering from a nagging injury and spending some time on the bench watching the game develop in front of him used this time for his benefit seeing different baseball situations.
“I think for a senior who has the ability like Matt Hitt does I know it is a matter of time before you got to put me back into the game coach,” Alexander said about his senior catcher. “I do not thinking sitting him out hurts them as much other than he wants to be in the game. He all ready has an injury that he has got to play through the whole year and he has been wearing a cast and plying through it very well.”
McKenney lasted four innings for Bowling Green giving up seven hits, five earned runs and did not strike out a batter.
“We did well and at times we chased a little out of the zone but we stayed with our plan with our approach,” Alexander said. “It gave a chance to win and that is a big thing to get key hits when we need them and I think that we did that today.”
Bowling Green State University baseball coach Danny Schmitz was hoping to get some offense but he did not count on Weber having a solid performance against the Falcons.
Schmitz is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and continues searching for consistency from his pitching staff.
The bullpen is young but getting experience and both coaches agree that is beneficial for any player.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon May 6, 2012 at Oestrike Stadium, Alexander will be saying good by to eight seniors and hello to a series sweep against Bowling Green State University.
