Volstad’s Struggles Continue as Cubs Fall 5-1

Recap: The Chicago Cubs seemed to be hitting their stride going into the second game of the series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but Dodgers starting pitcher Chris Capuano (4-0) wanted to put a stop to it, and did so indeed. Capuano pitched seven scoreless innings with three hits, and to top it off he knocked in two runs of his own at the plate as the Cubs fall 5-1 Saturday afternoon. The Cubbies just seem to struggle against Capuano as he is 9-3 against them in 13 starts. Cubs starter Chris Volstad falls to 0-4 this season, continuing to struggle giving up yet another inning of three or more runs with three runs given up in the second inning. Volstad pitched five innings giving up five runs on four hits, walking three, and is now 0-9 dating back to last July. The one bright spot for the Cubs was Starlin Castro to who had three hits, but even he had issues, committing his league leading eighth error of the season. Ian Stewart drove in the only run for the Cubs in the ninth inning.
Impact of Loss: This loss drops the Cubs to 10-17 overall for the year. Chris Volstad just can’t seem to get the outs when he needs them the most. His inability to keep runners from scoring has been an issue all season long. When the opposition is in scoring position Volstad gives up a staggering .382 batting average to hitters. This stat alone tells the story. His poor play cannot continue if the Cubs want to stay consistent and competitive. Volstad must find a way to settle down , and stay poised when runners get on base if he wants to end this tumultuous slump.
Team Notes: Starlin Castro’s three hits on Saturday increases his total to 38 on the year which is the most on the team. His .352 batting average is fifth in the National League. Castro has now had two or more hits in four of his last five games. Unfortunately his success at the plate hasn’t translated to the infield. Committing his major league leading eighth error on Saturday, Castro’s struggles in the infield continue.
Looking Ahead: Cubs starter Matt Garza (2-1) has once again been scratched due to flu-like symptoms. Left hander Travis Wood from Triple-A Iowa will replace him in Sunday’s rubber match against the Dodgers. Wood will be facing Dodgers starter Aaron Harang who has is 1-2 with a 5.72 ERA. The Cubs are looking to bounce back from Saturday’s tough loss and finish the series strong with a much needed victory against the first place LA Dodgers.
