The Blue Jays are coming to town tonight to take on the tumbling Twins. Tumbling into the abyss that is. The Minnesota Twins are bottom of the pack in the American League in terms of team batting average (.231, #11), runs scored (102, #14, 3.4 runs per game), hits (237, #13) and home runs (18, #14) — just a note, Josh Hamilton for the Texas Rangers already has 14 home runs.
As far as Minnesota pitching goes, there’s not much change there either. They rank dead last in ERA (5.48), complete games (0), strikeouts (151) and wins (8). In fact, Carl Pavano and Jason Marquis lead the team with only 2 wins each.
It’s been a safe bet to say that the Twins are the worst team in the American League if not in all of baseball.
The Blue Jays are faring better coming in 3rd in the AL East with a 17-14 record. They have two starters in their rotation with four wins apiece, Brandon Morrow (4-1, 2.27 ERA) and Ricky Romero (4-0, 3.56 ERA).
The pitching match-up tonight will be Henderson Alvarez (2-2, 2.83 ERA) for the Jays versus Jason Marquis (2-1, 5.40 ERA). Both pitchers hold the same amount of wins, but Alvarez has a distinct advantage with an ERA over 2.5 points lower than Marquis.
The Blue Jays as a team are ranked 8th in the AL in ERA at 3.81 and are ranked 4th in runs scored with 146, a 4.7 runs per game average. Needless to say, they are giving up almost 2 runs less per game than the Twins and are scoring almost a run and a half more per game.
If the Minnesota Twins are to turn their dismal season around, they will need to start now with this series against the Jays. According to the stats, that’s not going to be an easy task. They will have to dig deep, find that much needed leadership on the field and play with heart. Otherwise, a series loss, and they could find themselves tumbling deeper into the abyss.
