Will Middlebrooks OK as #64…for now

This afternoon Red Sox rookie 3rd baseman Will Middlebrooks joined fans in a live chat session moderated by NESN on NESN.com. Middlebrooks covered everything from what it’s like to finally break into the big leagues, about wearing a higher number until he earns his place on the team, to what he’s going to get his mom for Mother’s Day!

Questions from fans mainly focused on Middlebrooks new-found success for the Sox saying, “it’s a cliché, but it’s a dream come true — it really is. This is what I worked for my whole life so it feels really good to finally get here,” and that, “The media is tough…nothing really prepares you for all the media and attention on an everyday basis.”

Sure the media is tough, Will! But so far, most of the media is pretty excited to have someone new who has lots of good energy to bring to the Sox lineup. One person who’s helping him get by: Middlebrooks says Mike Aviles, whom he met in spring training, has really taken him under his wing–Aviles is even letting Middlebrooks live with him until he finds out how long he’ll be staying in Boston! (Hopefully long enough to buy his own house or apartment–anyone else feel this way?)

Middlebrooks also told fans that his family is even more excited than he is, since they were able to attend his first three games, and that he’ll probably give his mom ”flowers and a card” and maybe even his famous grand slam ball–for Mother’s Day on Sunday, because “she’ll love it”.

Like any job, Will is getting a taste of being the new kid in town and paying his dues. Middlebrooks said, “ Being the new guy, they’re on you pretty good but it’s all good fun. There are plenty of things like carrying around stuff for the veterans, and getting people food and drinks. I’m basically their personal assistant.” While he doesn’t seem to mind all the personal assistant duties, he also doesn’t mind wearing his spring training number, at least for now. Middlebrooks changed his Twitter handle a few days ago from @16WMbrooks to just @Middlebrooks [1], telling fans that “it’s a tradition that when the rookies come up they’re given a high number and that they have to earn the low number. But I’m fine with 64 because that was Dustin Pedroia’s number when he won Rookie of the Year.” Will #64 earn Middlebrooks that same coveted title this season? Only time will tell, but he said that “the passion of Red Sox Nation… is something that pushes you to play better.”

Is Will Middlebrooks the savior that Red Sox Nation has desperately been hoping for during the rough start to this season?
