Wild Game in Milwaukee as Cubs Fall 8-7 in Extra Innings

Recap: Friday night was a battle of the bottom feeders of the National League Central, but that didn’t make the game any less enjoyable, unless you‘re a Cubs fan. In a crazy game, the Chicago Cubs were unable able to pull out the win against the Milwaukee Brewers, losing 8-7 in 13 innings. With the game tied at seven a piece in the bottom of the 13th inning, Cubs rookie reliever Lendy Castillo didn’t have a great start to the inning. He hit Brewers’ batters Rickie Weeks and Ryan Braun with a pitch. To make matters worse he gave up a single to former Cubs third basmen Aramis Ramirez to load the bases. Next up for the Brewers was Corey Hart. He was the one responsible for the game going into extra innings with a two-run shot in the ninth. Hart capitalized on the clutch opportunity once again with a walk-off single to win the game. Cubs pinch hitter David DeJesus had a great game going 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs with a grand slam in the seventh inning that put the Cubs up 4-1, and had an RBI triple in the ninth. Unfortunately the lowly Cubs bullpen was unable to sustain the lead.
Impact of Loss: The Cubs fall to 13-19 overall, and are tied for last place with Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central. Poor production from the bullpen was the cause for the loss Friday night. Carlos Marmol, who was removed recently removed from his closer position, had an opportunity to redeem himself in the seven inning with a four run lead, but to no avail. He gave up a run and walked one before leaving due to injury. Michael Bowden didn’t help the cause either by giving up three runs in the seventh to give the Brewers a one run lead going into the eighth. Rookie closer Rafael Dolis had his opportunity as well to put the game away with a two run lead in the bottom of ninth, but a two run homerun ended those chances. Unable to find a rhythm in the 13th, Castillo loads the bases and the rest is history.
Team Notes: Carlos Marmol will be put on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Maybe that will be a blessing in disguise for the Cubs bullpen. Starlin Castro struggled Friday going 1 for 6, but his hit extends his current hitting streak to ten. David DeJesus hit his second grand slam of his career, and first as a pinch hitter.
Looking Ahead: Saturday’s game two, in Milwaukee, will feature Cubs pitcher Chris Volstad (0-4), who is looking for his first win of the season. Volstad has an ERA of 6.55. The Brewers will be starting Shaun Marcum who is 1-1 with an ERA of 3.41. If Friday’s exciting game was any indication of how this series will go, this will definitely be an entertaining series to watch.
