All Quiet On The Offensive Front

Tigers manager Jim Leyland’s logic for starting six left-handed hitters against Oakland A’s starter Brandon McCarthy was that lefties hit over 100 points better against him. That logic was tossed out the window as McCarthy struck-out 10 Tigers hitters, and led the A’s to a 3-1 victory in Oakland last night.

McCarthy (3-3) pitched seven stellar innings giving up no runs, and allowing only four hits. He struck out the combined power of Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and Delmon Young in order in the sixth inning, and collectively six times on the night. It was by-far his best outing of the season, and the worst for an sinking Tigers offense.

Tigers starter Doug Fister (0-1) matched McCarthy pitch for pitch most of the evening. Fister struck out eight, allowing one earned run, and five hits over six innings. He threw 105 pitches, and it appears that the pitch count limit instituted after his return from the disabled list has been lifted.

A's First Baseman Daric Barton lets a Danny Worth pop-up bunt drop, and roll foul to the astonishment of A's catcher Kurt Suzuki.

The Tigers bullpen once again proved it cannot keep the team in tight ballgames. Phil Coke relieved Fister in the seventh. He promptly gave up three hits, and two runs before being lifted in favor of Octavio Dotel who pitched hitless baseball the rest of the night.

Alex Avila hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning scoring Delmon Young for the only run of the night, and saving the Tigers from being shut-out. The last time the Tigers were shut-out was July 16th, 2011 against the Chicago White Sox.

The series finale is this afternoon at 4:05pm. Justin Verlander (3-1, 2.63 ERA, 0.94 WHIP) starts for the Tigers against Jarrod Parker (1-0, 1.80 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) for the A’s.
