Braves finish road trip with sweep

When this road trip started, I thought it would be a victory if the Braves could finish at 5-4. But they went 7-2, and made an equally emphatic statement by going into St. Louis and sweeping the Cards. The sweep culminated in a 7-4 victory. Tommy Hanson did just enough for the win to go to 4-3. He was pulled after five innings, while Lance Lynn shouldered his first blemish of the season to fall to 6-1. Jason Heyward was Atlanta’s offensive star. He went 3-4 with three RBI’s. His double with two outs in the third scored three runs, and it came at the end of a 10-pitch battle. The outburst raised his average to .252, a good sign as he tries to rebound from his miserable 2011 campaign. Random stat of the day. The loss denied the rookie Lynn’s bid to be the first Cardinal to win his first 7 starts in a season since 1920. That’s before Dizzy Dean and the old Gashouse Gang.
Looking at the standings, Atlanta sits mathematically died with Washington for tops in the NL East. The Braves now have a mini four-game homestand with a pair against the Reds and Fish before starting the Interleague portion of 2012 by journeying to the great soundbooth known as the Trop in Tampa. Philly is in the bottom of the division, with the Mets and Marlins in the middle. It’s a nice run, but it’s still a little early before we can call this a two-horse race. Like I said earlier, Philly’s pitching is too strong for them to be counted out. I’m looking forward for the next meeting between Washington and Atlanta.
