Cubs On a Two Game Skid With Loss to Brewers 8-2

Recap:  The Chicago Cubs were looking to avenge the tough loss  they suffered Friday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.  Quite the opposite happened for the Cubs as they drop game two of the series 8-2.  Cubs starter Chris Volstead (0-5) took the mound looking for his first win in his last 18 starts.  Volstad was pitching a solid game, and his first win of the season, although not guaranteed with the game tied through five innings, was a reasonable assumption.  That was until the game got into the bottom of the sixth inning.  In all of Volstad’s starts this season he has been victim to that one bad inning that essentially puts the game out of reach for the Cubs.  Unfortunately this game was no different.  Giving up a grand slam in the sixth inning to Brewers hitter Edwin Maysonet, Volstad threw 99 pitches, and allowed a total of six runs on nine hits.  The Cubs eventually scored another run in the eighth inning, but it was too little too late for the North Siders.

Impact of Loss:  The Cubs have now lost two straight and remain at the bottom of the NL Central with a 13-20 record.  Once again its the same old story for Chris Volstad.  Have a good start to the game then all of a sudden his location becomes off, which leads to frustration, and trying to do too much when things go wrong.  A change needs to strongly be considered.  This is now his 18th winless start dating back to last July.  At some point there has to be adjustment, whether it’s from Volstad mentally, or a personnel change by manager Dale Sveum.  Volstad’s inconsistency during games has hurt the Cubs as a team. Surely all the blame for the Cubs struggles  is not all on him, but is lack of production is evident as he has not finished a game with a lead all season.

Team Notes:  Starlin Castro’s 10 game hit streak came to an end Saturday with a 0-4 performance.  First basemen Bryan LaHair has now reach base safely in 29 straight games. LaHair is batting .354, and is second in the National League in slugging percentage with .698.  With reliever Carlos Marmol on the 15 day DL, the Cubs brought up minor league pitcher Casey Coleman from Triple A Iowa, who pitched in the seventh inning of Saturday’s game.

Looking Ahead:  Chicago Cubs starting right-hander Jeff Samardzjia will be looking to get at least one win for his team in Sunday’s game against the Brewers. Samardzija is 4-1 with a 3.03 ERA.  He will be up against Brewers pitcher Marco Estrada, who is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA.
