The Things I Like About the 2012 Yankees

I am like 100 George Steinbrenners.  Yankee wins are a relief to me and losses really tick me off.  As you can tell from this blog I am quite pessimistic when it comes to the Yankees.  I am all about the championship or bust mantra “Big Stein” put into place when he bought the Yankees in 1973.  I have no patience for mediocrity, especially when I pay Yankee prices for tickets, merchandise, and satellite TV.  I feel like the Yankees should be slump proof playing with baseballs’ highest payroll that supports the games most talented roster.  I will always love the Yankees but somehow I feel we are in for a long summer with this 2012 team.  There are tons of things I hate about this ball club as it is currently constructed so I thought I would write about a few of the things I actually like.

What has been more awesome to see than the resurgence of Derek Jeter?  Coming into play tonight the Captain was batting .372 with an astounding 54 hits in 34 games played.   His 5 homers is 1 less than he had all of last season.  Jeter is hitting the ball with authority almost every time he steps to the plate.  He now has 3,142 hits in his career which ties him with Robin Yount for 16th place all-time.  Derek continues to be as steady as always on defense and even looks faster running the bases.   I just hope he does not run out of gas too soon or this team could be in a world of trouble.  Regardless of that it is great to see a legendary Yankee playing so well at such an advanced age.

The other thing I am enjoying watching the 2012 Yankees is realizing how good Alex Rodriguez really is.  He may not be the most likeable guy in sports but he has an unquestionable work ethic.  You can tell he has immense talent.  I believe this current team would fall apart without his .280 5 HR and 14 R.B.I’s with an outstanding .384 OBP.  Sure it’s not superstar-esque but it is rock solid and has him on pace for a 30HR season.  I often remark to my fellow Yankee fans that we should all feel guilty for how much we hated on the guy when Joe Torre was manager.  I would be ecstatic if some of his current teammates put up close to the numbers Rodriguez put up from 2004 through 2007.  They might help some of those guys actually earn some of their money.  Many Yankee fans have a hard time putting Rodriguez in the class of “Great Yankees”.  I sure don’t after his performance in the 2009 postseason.   If something were to happen to A-Rod this year I might not be able to watch.

C.C. Sabathia is the final thing I truly enjoy about this team.  He continues to be just rock solid and steady.  He may go down as the best free agent signing in Yankee history.  He is already 5-0 with an AL leading 53 strikeouts in this young season.  If he keeps it up he may just win the 2nd Cy Young award of his career.  The return of Andy Pettitte helps but this pitching staff would be an abomination without it’s ace.  C.C. guarantees my t.v. is on YES every night he pitches.

I have serious doubts the 2012 Yankees are going to make the playoffs much less make a run.   Thankfully I can count on these 3 guys to show up everynight and make that prospect a little brighter.  I can lean on the fact that  Jeter, A-Rod, and C.C. will always honor the proud Yankee tradition.   That will help me to somewhat enjoy a summer filled with what I believe will be otherwise joyless baseball.
